3.5 Very Good

Review: Aaja Nachle
The film directed by debutant Anil Metha, Madhuri’s comeback film, aaja nachle ! Is a good film? Or a bad film? Difficult to decide.
Diya, a small town girl, who would like to be a dancer, was the high light of that Shamli town, Ajanta Theater. She fall in love with Steve, a americain reporter… run away to America after fighting with her family whose make her marriage with the village boy, Mohan (Ranbir Shoery) who love Diya. Diya has been helped by her friend, Najma played by Divya Dutta. She came back after 11 years to that town with her daughter… where no one respect her… saying she is not a good girl, she’s corrupted. And the story begin… Its to save the theater which will soon transformed into the shopping mall under the guideline of the foreign educated young MP Raja Shahed (Akshay Khanna). Diya met Mp, and the deal to make the show with the artist from the town. And its about how Diya succeed after the big challenge.

Director Anil Mehta has done good job, but the location should be better. The story shoud be better… as the script is running and ruling the story more and more complicated in the first half. The first half should be better edited too. One annoying scene is Diya back from New York and her guru is dying… that’s show on video. Ridiculous! The second half is good, specially the play and the effort to make the show. Cinematography could been better. Music is ok, not great. But the music will be very enjoyable with the screen. Not alone… as some songs are as the script demand.

Now turning to the performance. Why Madhuri choose this film? Her comeback should be with more dhoom. Her dance are really great as her performance, she’s great! But the script spoil the film. Ranbir and Konkona surprise as they deliver a good performance and good chemistry. Ranbir shoery is first rate. Akshay Khanna in short role, but well performed. Divya Dutta got no scoop. Irfan Khan, in a short role, done a good job. Vinay Phatak surprise you here with a great performance. Jugal Hansraj is wasted. Her guruji and doctor is ok.

On the whole, Aaja Nachle should be loved by Madhuri’s fans. Her comeback is worth to see but not with a bang like Kajol comeback last year’s Fanaa. Madhuri may win many wah wah from audiences. Otherwise, the film is strickly ok. Not a great film, but rated as the good normal hindi movie. Go and watch just for Madhuri and the laila-Majnu good play.
