Star Entertainment has brought the long-anticipated The Witch: Part 2. The Other One. “Audiences no longer care what language their content is in, as long as the story is great! We’re so excited to bring Korea’s highly anticipated thriller, Witch 2, filled with thrilling and immersive action sequences, to India. Stay tuned for more international releases powered by Star Entertainment,” Jiten Hemdev, CEO, of Star Entertainment, tells Bollywood Hungama.

Starring newcomer Shin Si Ah, and directed by Park Hoon Jung, the story follows Sia, as just another girl with unnamed powers, who escapes from a top-secret laboratory, pursued by multiple violent groups. Ahead of the film’s arrival in India, leading lady Shin Si Ah spoke exclusively to Bollywood Hungama about her role, what was it like coming into the fantasy universe, working with some of the celebrated actors and what’s next for her.

The Witch: Part 1 – The Subversion was a huge hit in terms of not just the story but also how strong the cast was. Coming on board in the sequel, The Witch: Part 2. The Other One, were you nervous or under pressure?

I tried not to compare the two movies. It was a bit of pressure but it made me responsible and had me preparing and working harder on The Witch Part 2. I focused more on doing my best.

Considering The Witch: Part 2. The Other One is your debut film, what kind of preparation you underwent for the role?

I prepared a lot for the analysis and understanding of the character ‘girl’. After reading the script at first, I thought that the role of the ‘girl’ would have to speak more with expressions and looks than lines. So, I tried to understand her, and I listed her thoughts in each scene and tried to make looks and expressions, filled with the thoughts that came to mind. Just because she doesn’t have a line doesn't mean she doesn’t think. Even at that moment, her mind was filling up quickly with thoughts. And I tried to look like the girl on the outside too, with action training and shaving half of my head.

Since Kim Da Mi was highly appreciated for her role in the first part and you were to take a similar role and move forward, was it challenging to essay this role?

Ja Yoon of The Witch Part 1 and the ‘girl’ of Part 2, who I played, are similar but have a lot of differences. So, I studied and put my thoughts on building my own new ‘girl’ character while referring to Ja Yoon. I was also a big fan of Part 1, so I prepared the role of the ‘girl’ with greater responsibility. In fact, it was not without the pressure, but I tried to prepare these processes pleasantly.

How has this experience shaped you as someone who is starting out in the industry?

It was precious to me. Seeing myself on the big screen, for the first time, was overwhelming. Through this film, I was able to know myself better as an actress and I learned and felt many things in the moments of filming. I will probably remember this experience while I work as an actress.

When the sequels arrive, there’s already an added pressure to live up to the audience’s expectations. But this was also your introduction to the audience as well. What was your mindset going into the project?

While filming The Witch Part 2, I tried to think that every moment is the last and did my best so I wouldn’t regret it. It’s my first film ever, which I have desperately prepared and worked on, so I tried to surpass my limits. Also, the scene that I do as the ‘girl’ is a time that will not come back, so I worked with a precious and dear heart.

This sequel boasts an elite cast. You spent a lot of time working with Park Eun Bin who is one of the finest actresses in the industry. What was it like working with her?

Park Eun Bin took care of me, just as Kyung Hee took care of the ‘girl’. Just as Kyung Hee helped the girl to adapt, who came out of the world for the first time, Park Eun Bin took care of me and helped me when everything was still awkward and new because it was my first time on the set. So, I got a lot of help from her. She would see my condition and encourage me so that I won’t get nervous. It was an honour to work with her.

Lee Jong Suk and Jin Goo are such celebrated stars. Was there anything specific you got to learn from them?

Jin Goo is the life of the party. I was worried because I am actually a bit shy, but thankfully he came up to me first. He would always ease my nerves with jokes and give me great advice. I’m so grateful to him. I didn’t have a scene together with Lee Jong Suk, regrettably.

What was the learning curve working with Park Hoon Jung?

Director Park Hoon Jung is like a guide. He led me well, as it was my first time for everything and helped me overcome my limits. He would always say “you are the girl” and trusted me, so I was able to work more passionately.

After this, what kind of genres would you like to try the most?

Now that I’ve taken my first step as an actress, I want to challenge myself with various genres and roles, without setting certain limitations. I’m keen on finding all the different aspects that I have and showing them to the audience.

For The Witch: Part 2. The Other One, is there a key point you would like the audience to look forward to?

Wider universe and varied action scene is the key-point. Also, the chemistry between the ‘girl’, the new character, and those who chase or protect her is worth attention.
