EXCLUSIVE: Demian Bichir on Black Phone 2, “This is not your average horror movie, it’s a different level of movie making”

Veteran actor Demian Bichir, who joins the cast of Black Phone 2, has opened up about what audiences can look forward to in the highly anticipated sequel to Scott Derrickson’s 2021 horror hit. The first film, produced by Blumhouse and starring Ethan Hawke, became a surprise success for its eerie storytelling and emotional depth. Now, the sequel promises to expand the chilling universe with new characters, higher stakes, and a deeper emotional core.

Bichir, known for his versatility across film and television, describes Black Phone 2 as a genre film with meaning beyond its scares. “This is not your average horror movie. It’s a different level of movie making, and my biggest hope is that the millions of kids who are already big fans of the first film hopefully will enjoy this one, and that they will see themselves in Gwen and Finn and Ernesto. And maybe through that experience, we will have better adults out of those kids because, if they pay attention, they will learn. They will learn what the characters learned and understand how important it is to make the right choices,” he said in an exclusive quote with Bollywood Hungama.

 

The actor’s remarks suggest that Black Phone 2 aims to do more than simply terrify—it seeks to resonate with younger audiences through its moral undertones. With returning stars Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw reprising their roles as Finney and Gwen, and Ethan Hawke once again embodying the sinister Grabber, the sequel is expected to delve into the lasting effects of trauma and the resilience of youth.

 

Black Phone 2 will release in cinemas in India on October 31.
