Throwback: When Sushmita Sen almost withdrew from Miss India pageant because of Aishwarya Rai

In the year 1994, Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made India proud on the global platform when they were crowned as Miss Universe and Miss World respectively. Sushmita Sen became the first Indian to be crowned Miss Universe. However, not many know that Sushmita Sen has almost decided to withdraw from the pageant because of Aishwarya Rai.

Reportedly, Sushmita in an interview revealed that as many as 25 girls had withdrawn their name after knowing that Aishwarya was also participating. Sushmita was also about to do the same. But, it was her mother who scolded her and asked her to do her best. Sushmita also said that she was convinced that she would lose the competition as Aishwarya had won most of the rounds.

However, Sushmita ended up winning the Miss India title and eventually won the Miss Universe title as well. She later made her debut in Bollywood with the 1996 release Dastak and went on to feature in several other films.
