SHOCKING: When Rishi Kapoor asked Subhash Ghai, "Do you even have a sense of music?" - the Showman reveals at Karz screening at Red Lorry Film Festival

The 2nd Red Lorry Film Festival 2025 commenced today, that is, Friday, March 21 and the opening film was Karz (1980). The screening was attended by the film’s director Subhash Ghai and its actors Tina Ambani, Simi Garewal and Abha Dhulia. Lead actor Rishi Kapoor is no more and he was represented by his wife, Neetu Kapoor. The others present at the screening were co-producer Jagjit Khorana, producer Akhtar Farooqui’s son Raju Farooqui, cinematographer Kamalakar Rao and Subhash Ghai’s wife and daughter Mukta Ghai and Meghna Ghai Puri. After Subhash Ghai felicitated them, he sat down to have a discussion about Karz with director Atul Sabharwal of Aurangzeb (2013) fame.

Subhash Ghai said, “I wanted to tell this story through music and I could not imagine any other hero. If you see Karz, you’ll realize that the whole film is told through music. I told Laxmikant-Pyarelal ji, ‘This is your film and Anand Bakshi film’.”

 

He continued, “When I told Rishi Kapoor the story, he asked, ‘Are you sure you want to make this’. This is because, in the earlier reincarnation films, the character would have the same face in his next life as well. He was apprehensive since I was not following this template. I reasoned, ‘This is what I want to experiment with’. He was convinced and agreed.”

 

He then narrated a hilarious incident, “We began the shoot by filming the song ‘Dard-E-Dil Dard-E-Jigar’. He asked me, ‘Where is the dance director?’. I said, ‘Why do you need one? It’s a party song and you are singing’. He said, ‘Normally, dance director hota hai movements dikhane ke liye’.”

 

Subhash Ghai added, “Then, he asked me a very funny question. He asked, ‘Do you even have a sense of music?’! I replied, ‘I don’t know but I’ll try to prove it’.”

 

He then said, “When Rishi Kapoor saw the final cut of the song, he hugged me lovingly and apologized. He got even more confident about the film.” He revealed, “He was the only actor who never cared about money or business. He had no tantrums poore Kapoor khandaan mein se sabse bada star toh Rishi Kapoor hi tha! Ab Ranbir bhi hai.”
