The trailer launch of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai was scheduled for May 21. At the last moment, the event was cancelled leaving the media and industry shocked and wondering what happened. Meanwhile, producer Vashu Bhagnani has a legal dispute with Ramesh Taurani of Tips over Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The Varun Dhawan-starrer is directed by David Dhawan. Many speculated whether Vashu Bhagnani had taken legal action to stop the trailer launch. On May 22, he addressed select members of the media through a virtual press conference and spoke about this aspect.
Vashu Bhagnani said, “Jo aadmi galti ya chori karta hai, woh definitely bahane dhoodta hai. They claim there’s a technical glitch. They knew that if they had gone ahead with the launch, it would have been a contempt of court. But they can’t talk about it obviously. Now they have moved the Patna High Court. Inke oopar criminal case hua hai kyunki inhone chori ki hai.”
He added, “Everyone – Varun ji, Ramesh ji and David ji – knew that the case was going on. But they felt ‘Vashu Bhagnani fraud hai. Woh aise hi hamare saath masti kar raha hai’. They thought they were legally correct and didn’t trust the court order. Finally, someone from their legal team must have told them that it’ll be contempt of court. They even approached the Patna Court today. Honestly, neither my legal team nor I stopped them. They are not even counting us.”
He further said, “If there’s a settlement, it’ll benefit everyone. No one is ready to fight. Yeh financial ladayi nahin hai. Yeh ethics ki ladayi hai. It’s a fight for my rights. And my rights are not for sale.”
Vashu added, “My family is simple. They are telling me, ‘Chhod do’. How do I tell them that this is my hard work? Today, if I let it go, who will take care of their future? I made films for their betterment. Today, I am 65. I might pass away in 10 years or even 5 years. Lekin yeh log iss tarah se mere peeche padenge, toh main 3 saal mein hi ludak jaaunga. Meri family ko khatam karne mein inka poora haath hai. Meanwhile, they are expanding their families.”
He revealed, “I remember Shringar Films used to distribute our films. They would often come after 5 years and hand me a royalty of Rs. 17,400. That seventeen thousand would seem like seventeen lakhs.”
He said, “Why do only music companies enjoy royalties? They have just paid money (to buy the rights). That’s it. Everyone should get their rightful due, including my brother David Dhawan.”
Coming back to Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, the trailer launch has now been rescheduled for Saturday, May 23.
