Farah Khan reveals she underwent IVF when Shah Rukh Khan was on his annual family vacation: “That break came as a godsend for me”

Farah Khan has always been candid about the highs and lows of her personal life, including her path to motherhood through IVF. In a new episode of Serving It Up With Sania, hosted by Sania Mirza, the filmmaker opened up about a deeply personal phase of her life and revealed how Shah Rukh Khan’s annual family vacations unexpectedly aligned with her IVF treatment schedule.

Sharing the emotional memory, Farah said, “Shahrukh every June-July used to go to London with his children, with Aryan and Suhana and Gauri. So, June-July he used to take a break, annual break. That break came as a, I don't know, as a God-send for me. Because in that break, I was doing no work and I could relax and go and do the IVF. And I was sure that now I will get pregnant and I had only 4 eggs left. And you were 42 already? I was 42.”

 

Farah and Shah Rukh Khan share one of Bollywood’s most enduring friendships. Their professional association goes back decades, with her debut directorial Main Hoon Na featuring the superstar alongside Sushmita Sen, Amrita Rao, and Zayed Khan. During the podcast, Farah also reflected on the uncertainty and determination that defined her IVF journey. At 42, with only a handful of viable eggs left, the window was narrow, but she remained hopeful. The break in work schedule—coinciding with Shah Rukh Khan’s annual family trip—offered her the rest, privacy and stillness she needed to undergo treatment.

 

For those unaware, Farah Khan married film editor Shirish Kunder in 2004. After several attempts and careful planning, the couple opted for IVF and welcomed triplets in 2008—one son and two daughters. Over the years, she has been vocal about normalising IVF and encouraging more women to speak openly about fertility challenges without shame or stigma.

 

With her latest revelation, Farah once again highlights the emotional realities behind IVF, while also acknowledging the role of timing, support and unwavering faith in her journey to becoming a mother.
