EXCLUSIVE: Inside Bhumi Pednekar’s 3-month prep for Daldal: Psychologists, silence and breaking the ‘cop hero’ image

Bhumi Pednekar, in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, revealed why Daldal demanded one of the most rigorous preparation processes of her career. “My prep was about three to three and a half months. Every day, an hour and a half, we would just sit on the script and read scenes,” she said.

The process went far beyond rehearsals. Bhumi shared that the team delved deeply into her character’s psychological history. “We spoke about her childhood, her trauma, her triggers, everything.”

 

One of the most striking aspects of her prep involved sessions with psychologists. “They actually got me to do multiple sessions with psychologists, who work with criminals, to understand criminal psychology.” Costume and body language were also key decisions. “She doesn’t want to be noticed. If someone sees her walking in a market, they wouldn’t think she’s a DCP.”

 

Bhumi was careful to avoid stereotypical portrayals. “We didn’t want to make her masculine in a man’s world, but we also didn’t want glamour. She’s flawed, broken, earnest only about her job.”

 

This layered preparation allows Daldal to portray a police officer who feels painfully real someone whose authority doesn’t shield her from internal chaos. Bhumi’s commitment to authenticity ensures the character resonates long after the screen fades to black.
