30 Years Of Khiladi EXCLUSIVE: “There was so much dance that our legs and hamstrings were breaking. Akshay Kumar was into physical fitness while I was a little easy with my life. Hence, it was worse for me” – Deepak Tijori

Venus Records and Tapes’ Khiladi completed 30 years on June 5. The film is remembered for its performances, humour, writing and most importantly, for its songs. The film had a relatively new star cast (Akshay Kumar, Ayesha Jhulka, Deepak Tijori and Sabeeha) and new directors (Abbas-Mustan) and it was the songs which helped a lot in creating a buzz. Even today, after three decades, the tracks continue to remain popular.

30 Years Of Khiladi EXCLUSIVE: “There was so much dance that our legs and hamstrings were breaking. Akshay Kumar was into physical fitness while I was a little easy with my life. Hence, it was worse for me” – Deepak Tijori

Deepak Tijori, in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, spoke about the songs of Khiladi and also the challenges faced while shooting them. Deepak said, “I was not prepared for such kind of songs in the film. Venus was also a music company. They had come up with excellent songs with humongous production values. For ‘Khud Ko Kya Samajti Hai’, choreographer Chinni Prakash sir took 17 days to film! Generally, it takes 5-6 days even if there are 3 antaras. Nevertheless, it was amazing!

A part of it was shot in Sophia’s College, a part of it was filmed in Don Bosco School and so on. And he’d be like ‘confetti udao, powder udna chahiye’. These were all South Indian film elements that he was trying to incorporate into Bollywood songs. It was quite new for us. And there was so much dance that our legs and hamstrings were breaking.”

Deepak Tijori continued, “Akshay Kumar was into physical fitness while I was a little easy with my life! Hence, it was worse for me. Moreover, I was also doing Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992) at that time. So, I’d film for that and then shoot for Khiladi and once again, shoot for Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. I was literally being torn apart. And those were completely contrasting characters. Hence, it was a crazy ride, yet it was fun as the songs were so good and picturized so well. Had it not been for Chinni sir, these songs would not have looked so great.

Deepak Tijori then revealed, “Also, credit goes to cinematographer Thomas Xavier. During the climax song 'Tu Shama Main Parwana', just look at how he has shot the portion where I suddenly recall having seen Kunika before. He got the papers cut into a certain shape and kept them on the lights to create that dramatic effect. The movie Khiladi was truly something else!”
