Sobhita Dhulipala is set to explore a different side of her acting with Pa. Ranjith’s upcoming Tamil film Vettuvam. The actor, who has previously played characters shaped by social expectations and emotional restraint, said the role of Radhi allowed her to portray a more instinctive and expressive woman.

Speaking at a recent event, Sobhita reflected on some of the restrained characters she has played, citing Tara from Made in Heaven as an example. She explained that Tara’s circumstances often prevent her from openly expressing her anger or emotions.

“I’ve played parts that are… like let’s take the example of Tara, because so many of you were like we really like Tara! So realistically, let’s say something happens in a scene with Tara and she’s super pissed off, she’s not actually in a position to lash out or or be very out there with how she’s feeling. She has to hold it in. That is the reality of her circumstances,” she said.

Sobhita added that while she has portrayed a variety of characters, many of them have been influenced by some form of social pressure to remain contained. “So, even though in my career, I’ve played a variety of parts, often I’ve played parts that were under some kind of a social pressure to be contained,” the actor said.

Sobhita Dhulipala on playing Radhi in Vettuvam

According to Sobhita, Vettuvam offered her the kind of role she had been looking to explore. Describing Radhi, she said she was drawn to the character’s instinctive and expressive nature. “And as an actor, I was really, really hungry to play a part that was instinctive, alive, and very, very expressive, and provocative, so this part in Vettuvam, the character’s name is Radhi. I got to be that in this film,” she said.

The actor also spoke about the different elements that come together in Vettuvam, including its apocalyptic setting, clan dynamics and martial arts. “This film is apocalyptic, it’s clannish. There is, uh, martial arts. It’s just a lot of very unexpected worlds coming together. And it’s, uh, visually like nothing like I’ve I’ve seen in our country,” Sobhita said.

She also recalled her reaction to the film’s martial arts component, adding, “And the whole martial arts thing, I was like amazed!.”

With Vettuvam, Sobhita is set to move away from the kind of emotionally restrained characters she has often portrayed. As Radhi, the actor gets to explore a woman who is more spontaneous and outwardly expressive, making the role a different experience for her as a performer.
