Bareilly Ki Barfi Review {2.5/5} & Review Rating
EXPECTATIONS
I wasn't too sure about what the music of Bareilly Ki Barfi would have to offer. Given the small town setting of the film, one thing was sure that the music would be rooted. An ensemble of composers, lyricists and singers come together to create seven tracks in the album.
MUSIC
As expected, it is a rooted beginning for Bareilly Ki Barfi as Dev Negi, Pawni Pandey and Shraddha Pandit team up for Shabbir Ahmed written 'Sweety Tera Drama'. A feel good smile-through number that could well have been extracted out of Badrinath Ki Dulhania, 'Sweety Tera Drama' is as 'desi' as it gets, courtesy Tanishk Bagchi who gets the basics right for a song of this setting. Pravesh Mallick chips in well with his rap.
After a rather short 'Sweety Tera Drama' comes 'Nazm Nazm', which actually turns out to be the highlight of the soundtrack. Put together by Arko who writes as well as composes the track, 'Nazm Nazm' instantly reminds one of 'Main Rang Sharbaton Ka' [Phata Poster Nikhla Hero] for the manner in which it begins and then lays the setting for the rest of the song. No wonder, there are as many as three versions what with Arko, Ayushmann Khurranna and Sumedha Karmahe going solo behind the mike. Each of these versions does well enough to ensure that by the time the album is through, you find yourself humming it.
Tanishk-Vayu write and compose 'Twist Kamariya' which is on the same lines as 'Sweety Tera Drama' when it comes to the 'desi' rooted feel. There is an ensemble of singers coming together for this one, right from Harshdeep Kaur, Yasser Desai, Tanishk & Altamash Faridi. While the song does manage to keep you engaged while it is on, there isn't much about it to make you believe that this would be played on for long.
The song that may end up finding a good shelf life though is 'Bairaagii'. This one has composer Samira Koppikar coming together with lyricist Puneet Sharma to create a romantic number that is just the kind you expect from Arijit Singh, who leads the show here. With Western arrangements amalgamated well with traditional Bollywood melody, 'Bairaagi' has Samira Koppikar pitching in as well behind the mike. Especially in her solo version, she makes a very good impression and ensures that you play this one on loop for some lovey-dovey times.
Last to arrive is 'Badass Babuaa' which is truly situational and could well play at multiple points in the film. Composed by Sameer Uddin with lyrics by Akshay Verma, this one has a team of Abhishek Nailwal, Neha Bhasin & Sameer Uddin coming together for a fun outing which has its job restricted to play in the background during a montage sequence.
OVERALL
The music of Barelly Ki Barfi delivers more than promised. However, the soundtrack has been unveiled quite close to release which means the music would grow more once the film has an extended run in theaters.
