Squid Game star Lee Jung Jae is gearing up for his first major Hollywood studio role with Disney+ series The Acolyte. The actor, who made history as the first Asian actor to win the Best Actor Emmy Award in 2022, will star as a Jedi Master in the upcoming mystery-thriller series in Star Wars universe.
According to Allkpop, set 100 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, The Acolyte consists of eight episodes and it tells the story of the galaxy's dark secrets and emerging forces of evil during the end of the Republic Era. In the real universe of Star Wars, “acolyte” refers to individuals with Force abilities who learn from a more experienced Sith Lord.
While details on the show are currently limited, Leslye Headland is showrunning, writing and directing. Lee Jung Jae’s addition to The Acolyte series marks Lee Jung Jae’s first major role post Squid Game, the hit Netflix drama that made him a global star. As reported by Lee Jung Jae's agency, Artist Company, on April 10, the actor attended the Star Wars Celebration in London on April 7.
In a recent conversation, Lee Jung Jae excitedly shared his thoughts on joining the Star Wars universe saying, “If 'Acolyte' wasn't a Star Wars series, I would have rejected it. But who could say no to Star Wars?” He also shared his enthusiasm of wielding a lightsaber and playing a cosmic swordsman in the Star Wars series.
Besides Lee Jung Jae, the mystery thriller series also stars Amandla Stenberg. The eight-episode series will be released on Disney+ in 2024.
