A month and a half after the release of 83, finally a new film arrives in theatres, Badhaai Do. With theatres operational all over the country again, albeit at scattered occupancy rule and amidst night curfews, it isn’t a complete release per se. Still, considering the fact that the Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar film is a mid-budget film and doesn’t need a bumper or a blockbuster opening to sail through, it isn’t really an issue.
That said, the film has seen a good count of theatres and screens for itself since it is the only Bollywood release and there is hardly any other option that is available to be screened. However, even in these properties, one can’t expect houseful signs on the very first day at least since this is more of a word of mouth film. Moreover with LGBTQ theme to it, the reach is anyways restricted, at least to begin with.
The good part is that the promo promises entertainment at least for its target audience and hence if the word of mouth post the first day is good then the weekend can see good jumps. This used to be the case for such kind of films pre-pandemic as well. The only difference is that back then such films opened around Rs. 3 crores mark and the current situation warrants that a Rs. 1-2 crore opening is on the cards. The team behind the film could be well aware of that and prepared for what follows at the box office from here.
