First of all one shouldn't compare the new Umrao Jaan to the old version. JP Dutta's Umrao Jaan is clearly based on the novel. Many critics have rated this movie as poor, which according to me is unfair. Almost all of them have surely compared the Ash starrer with the Rekha starrer. If a film as brilliant as Swades could be rated as poor by critics, I don't find it justified rating Umrao Jaan as poor. Its an Aishwariya Rai movie all the way. She's done a brilliant job in ever way, be it dancing/acting/looks. She emotes and expresses extremely well and looks stunning as usual. JP Dutta's version is well made but the only problem is with its length. Also choreography by Vaivabhi Merchant is not upto the mark. Saroj Khan would have been a much better choice for the choreography. Umrao Jaan of 2006 is definitely a movie that will make Indian Cinema proud. I would give it a 4 stars out of 5. And for the music, 3.5 stars out of 5.

I think the movie was great and so were the songs. Blieve me or not i have seen both umraao jaan and both were good in its own way. No matter what one says, it cannot be denied that Aishwariya did a wonderful job, her performance took me by surprise. Im only 24 years old, so dont think an old man is giving his review. I appreciate indian cinema and umraao jaan was flawless. The movie was a bit too long and boring, i agree but the way it revealed the tragedy of a human being that even a courtesan is beautifully and emotionally both at par. I believe the movie will win reviews from critics which matters more to me than tarans reviews as its always biased.

Umrao Jaan. Is not exactly a remake but it is taken from a novel. If you see the old umrao jaan the dialouges and many scenes are different. But I believe its J.P. dutta's poor attempt so far. The movie does not have the sparke to keep you on the seat for 3 + hours. It is a kind of movie you might want to watch on your tv not in the theatre.

Umrao Jaan of dis generation is not upto the mark coz dis movie is reworked on the RUSWA's Novel which fail to impress audience like 1982 Muzzafar Ali's Umrao.But the movie can be watched for Aishwarya once again she proved she is not only Good looking Doll but she is a brilliant actress.over all the emotions of Umrao is to watch the draw back of the movie is poor music and bad choreography and ugly selecton of Abhishek Bacchan for the role of nawab sultan he is a good actor but the role of nawab sultan he cudnt manage.Plus points r New look,J.P, Aishwarya,Shabana,Divya, Puru and rest of all except abhishek.Shabana Azmi is excellent.The movie will be flop at Box Office but yes dis movie always remember to Aishwarya Fans so they can add her fifth best performance after (HDDCS,DEVDAS,CHOKERBALI,PROVEKED and know UMRAO JAAN).

When you go to see a remake,it is advisable that the original version is not to be compared with. The filmmaker has a reason to make a 'Remake'. From this point of view, I went to see Umrao Jaan. The movie started with a slow pace and went on the fast track after intermission. Aishwarya Rai did full justice to the title role. Shabana Azmi excelled as Khanum Sahib. Abhishek B. performed as a good supporting actor. PuruRajkumar had his last scene as potential one. Music is good though tunes were repetitive. Direction showed slackness occassionally Overall, worth a look.

Umrao Jaan - Review By Nauman Hannani (Singapore) email: nauman_hannani@hotmail.com J P Dutta’s film is not Umrao Jan but Aishwarya-Jan. It is very depressing that a great performance by Aish (Aishwarya Rai) couldn’t stop the fans from disappointment. The reason is simple neither Aish nor J P Dutta are from Avadh, they simply do not know “what they need to achieve”. In summary the film is a great movie on any “Tawaif” but it is not a movie on Umrao Jaan. Aish probably gave her life performance in the film but she is simply does not look like an Umrao Jan from 19th Century’s Lucknow. She misses Tawaif’s Ada grossly. Her body language (which is generally best in bollywood) and her pronunciation don’t present a “Tawaif” from 19th century in Avadh”. For example, she continuously said Khudda as kudda in the whole film and has many more other pronunciations mistakes. If she can loose weight for Dhoom2, she should put some weight for Umrao Jaan. Girls use to be more bulky in 19th century as it was considered as beauty and J P Dutta Sahib should know it. Mirza Hadi Ruswa’s novel’s basic theme was “a great intellectual” can flourish even at brothel in 19th century’s Lucknow , simply because even brothel in 19th century’s Lucknow were extremely educated and mannered and also a “Tawaif “may have noble views & principals. J P Dutta has touched both but very casually as he is too involved in romance, love scenes, songs and showing Aish from different angles. Aish’s major problem is that her director focus’s mainly on her visuals but forgets the rest of the film, which was happen in the first part of the Umrao Jaan. Even a director like J P Dutta has flaws like in songs, the actor (musician) was playing Sarangi but there is no Sarangi in the song’s music. He involves too much in details, expensive costumes, sets and forgets the fact that a director must correctly “dream” about the film first so he knows what he should need to achieve by his direction. The dialogues are great but executions and pronunciations are very poor. Photography is outstanding, particularly timing of the filming but it could further improve by more outdoor shooting at historical places, like in Fanaa. The film is simply too “indoor” -. Lucknow was not shown properly by Shatrang ki Bazziyan, Battair ki Laddiyan and Mewe ki Hawiyan. Abhishek is good for giving “Pathaan touch” but Lucknow’s softness is missing. Shabana Azmi is excellent, she is the only one beside Himani Shivpuri & Kulbhushan Kharbanda, who knows, what they need to deliver. Puru Raaj Kumar and the rest are casual and achieve no praises. The most disappointing part in the film is the music. Even Javed Sahib’s great poetry can not save the outcome of the songs. The music is simply too repetitive except “Agle Janam” which is a great song. Although, Aish has delivered excellent dances but Choreography by Vaibhavi Merchant is disappointing. Mujras is not about the Kathak but about taal , steps & eyes contact. The sets for Mujars are too small, J P Sahib should learn from Pakiza about Mujra’s sets. In 19th century Nawab never sits together with Tawaif in Mujra, neither did they dance together on the floor. This is absolutely rubbish. J P Dutta Sahib falls in love with subject but he grossly misunderstood it.

good movie,good performances,expecially ash,but she lack the emotions which rekha put in in the former.The music is not a match to the former.yet,it is an ok film.The kudos goes to Ash,she carries the film solely.In some scene,she enact the role per rekha.Definately,she has watch umrao jaan lot of time,to be inspired by it.
