When you have a big banner, a groundbreaking director and an amazing set of high-rank actors and people rushing to the cinemas to compare it to the previous film it has been a remake of...who isn't going to expect big numbers at the box office? Big numbers...so be it, but sometimes weak films weave magic at the box-office and Umrao Jaan Ada is one of them. Eight year old Ameeran [Aishwarya Rai] is kidnapped by Dilawar Khan, an ex-criminal who was sent to prison with the help of Ameeran's father and does it to seek avengance. Dilawar takes her to a brothel owned by Courtesan, Khanum Sahib [Shabana Azmi] who takes young Ameeran with the small amount of a few rupees. Khanum Sahib names Ameeran Umrao and gives her away to Hussaini who teaches her good manners and educates her. When Umrao comes of age is time for her to perform her first mujra in a wedding, where she meets her love Nawab Sultan [Abhishek Bachan], the two of them embark on a relationship until Nawab Sultan is disowned by his father and is forced to leave Lucknow for Ghadi. Faiz Ali, a dacoit, comes to the brothel and sets eyes upon Umrao and falls in love with her. He promises to take her to Ghadi, where Umrao's Nawab is. She accepts and journeys to Gadhi only to find her intentions shattered by Faiz's schemes. Nawab sends Umrao back to Lucknow, but as they pass through Faizabad, Umrao's old home, she visits her folk's home, only to find out that they too have forgotten her. Umrao is forced to go back to being Umrao again and is doomed to live as Umrao, the courtesan forever. The way the film starts with the old man being carried to Umrao's brothel by her voice and then being told the story by Umrao herself is excellent. This idea works and J.P. Dutta scores points while thinking out such a great way to narrate the film. However, the film from there becomes slow, uninformative and exceedingly long consisting of annoying songs which only add to the slowness of the film and the dialogues, although poetic are too self-explanatory. for example: "Aap se bhetar ye kaun jaanega, kyon ki aap khud ek mashoor shayar hain," What is the need for that, J.P. should have though of another way to develop the characters rather than other characters doing it for him. The film works but only in patches, Ameeran's arrival at the brothel, Umrao's accounts with Khanum Sahib and the mujras are all glorious to watch, but the music and lyrics are nothing but annoying. Cinematography, locations, dialogues, choreography, costumes and acting are all very well done, giving Umrao Jaan that very glossy look, but apart from that there is nothing there. Aishwarya's performance is probably her best, finally the woman has learnt how to gain the label of an actress and has shown the world that she isn't just a beauty queen. Abhishek is good too, but we all know he can do much better. Shabana Azmi is excellent, the film is shared between her and Aishwarya equally. Suniel Shetty is really annoying with his drunken attitude and the constant buzzing around Umrao makes you want to slap him. The rest of the cast are ok. Overall, Umrao Jaan again sounds and looks good on celluloid but going into the film deeply shows you there is nothing there but a slow, unprovoking and long affair which is completely opposite of what Umrao Jaan should've been. A lackluster film from J.P.

JP DUTTA BANKRUPT....IN IDEA ! Good Director wasted his effort in making a rehash of a good Muzzafar Ali original Umrao Jaan with Rekha. Its a lesson for all directors not to attempt good work of other directors in the name of re-inventing the wheel. The problem with bollywood is that they dont have new ideas to explore. Great copies do not make great masterpieces! Be original J.P. Datta...you have talent dont waste it in mediocre stuff. The world is moving ahead in fast speed and we tend to live in the past. Why not make Moghu-e-Azam with Amitabh/Abhishekh/Aishwarya and Jaya Bachchan as Jodha Bai...???? any takers Mr. JP Datta....lets see if oyu can better K.Asif...why not...after all you have the ready script and a brilliant cast ( real family situation thrown in with Aishwarya portraying the ultimate role of Anarkali )food for thought or fodder for mediocre film making! Go eat your heart out and watch Aishwarya pouting and giggling like a over grown school kid.

a very boring movie the only good thing was the popcorn. in the original movie one could feel umrao jaans suppressed grief which spills over in the end in this movie aishwariya keeps crying until you are quite tired of it. jpdutta has made some good movies in the past but really he has failed to catch up with the changing trends in the industry.he should hang up his boots and invest his money in some younger directors. the other remake of the year at least had the biggest star in the industry playing the lead role with finesse. abhishek bacchan is overhyped as an actor and seems very uncomfortable and the less said about the other actors the better only shabhana azmi stands out in such a bad movie. she has carried of her role very comfortably. overall i would not advise anybody to watch this movie because everything about it is pure agony

One of the best movie of the year. Highly recommended movie. Its Ash. best movie of her career. Its slow movie but full of quality and if you are looking for something like action and fast movie then this is not the movie. If you are looking for quality and best acting and best making its the best movie to watch and you would actually feel good after the movie that what a quality movie it was. Ash. has become an actor after this movie she wasnt able to act before and now she can act and actually come in full package now with looks and acting. I would highly recommend to watch this movie and i am very sure that Ash. would get best actress of the year and the movie would atleast be nominated for best movie of the year.

UMRAO JAAN – Umrao Jaan, J.P.Dutta’s take on a classic tale based in 19th century Lucknow. Yes it…
UMRAO JAAN – Umrao Jaan, J.P.Dutta’s take on a classic tale based in 19th century Lucknow. Yes it is a period film and like most period films you get to see the style and the settings prevalent at that time. This is also being considered as a remake of the original Umrao Jaan starring Rekha. But I haven’t seen the original movie so do not expect any comparisons to be drawn here. Usually, I do not favor watching such period movies but it was Aishwarya Rai playing the role of Umrao Jaan that got me interested in the movie. Aish is indeed the most beautiful woman in the world and this is strictly my personal opinion. The promos of the movie also showed Aish looking absolutely lovely. Why am I talking so much about Aish…the reason is Umrao Jaan is Aish, Aish, Aish and only Aish right from the start to the end. The story begins with a flashback with Umrao Jaan (Aishwarya) telling her story from the time she was 8 years old. She was Amiran then, an innocent girl who didn’t want to leave her parents at any cost. But she is kidnapped and sold to a kotha as an act of revenge (The guy who kidnaps her was sent to jail by her father…the usual revenge story) The kotha is owned by Khanum (Shabhana Azmi) and Amiran now becomes Umrao. Here she learns all the adaa and nazakhat that a courtesan should know. She performs her first mujra and floors the very eminent Nawab Sultan (Abhishek). Umrao becomes Umrao Jaan and love blossoms between the 2 and a couple of more mujras are performed. But as fate should have it, the Nawab has to either forget Umrao or give up his father’s name and fame. The Nawab chooses the latter and is no longer welcome at the courtesan’s door. Enter Faiz Ali (Suniel Shetty) who is also bedazzled by the ethereal beauty of Umrao, but Umrao has already considered the Nawab as her Jaan. So do Umrao and the Nawab finally end up together? Is Umrao finally set free where she can once again become the Amiran that she was? The rest of the story delves on these possibilities. Coming to the performances, this is an Aishwarya treat all in all. She looks great in almost every frame and emotes beautifully as well. You can see Aish in all kinds of emotions, right from the disappointment of not getting to perform a mujra to the happiness when she actually does perform, to the anguish over losing her beloved. It’s all there to see. JP Dutta does make the right choice for the portrayal of Umrao Jaan. Abhishek Bachchan as the Nawab is efficient in the role. Both he and Aish share a likeable chemistry on screen. Shabhana Azmi as the kotha owner perfoms well. She plays the shrewd and stern owner perfectly. There are other actors also like Divya Dutta, Ayesha Jhulka but their roles are limited to a few minutes on screen. Unfortunately there are no such plus points for the movie (ok maybe one…Aish again!!). The historical story interlaced with a lot of Urdu makes the movie real slow and songs thrown in every now and then do not improve the pace of the film at all. Although a few of the songs are really nice to hear and special credit to Anu Malik and Javed Akhtar for them, the film suffers because of the subject mainly. It is a real slow movie and with movies like DON and JAANEMAN still in theatres this movie is also doomed to flop. JP Dutta is surely better off making his war epics rather than historical love stories. All in all…Umrao Jaan-a nahin !!

All I can say is massively over-rated movie. Shaban Azmi's performance was good as usual, Suniel Shetty was alright so as Abhishek Bachchan. But Aish' did nothing extraordinary to bring on the performance as many has said that she did. She's a very over-rated actress because except movie Raincoat, I haven't seen any of her performances that stick out. Overall, if you have nothing to do and need something to put you to sleep, go watch this movie.

Excellent movie in all respects. I do not know what it up with the mixed reviews... may be it has to do with IQ/ignorance level of the masses. But people who can appreciate literary values, acting, language and the splendour of the era will really enjoy the rich experience. Ash is absolutely gorgeous and has handled the role of Umrao with par excellence. No one else would have been able to do justice to the role which required the real skills in acting. I sincerely believe that Ash deserves the same amount of respect and kudos as Rekha got in old Umrao Jaan. For those sitting on the sidelines....please do not miss this real gem!
