If Adi had to make a movie after a long hiatus of 8 years then he should have come out of the hibernation by honing up his skills in direction, script and dialogues instead of thrusting upon the audiences a shoddy movie like Rab ne bana di jodi. With no story worth speaking of (a newly married uxorious husband Surinder Sahni (SRK) making a monkey of himself (through Raj’s character) to get his wife Taani (Anushka Sharma) love him through inept screenplay, listless dialogues and bad acting, the movie heaps more shame on Bollywood and infamy on the fading YRF banner. The movie reeks of contrived script, hopeless screenplay, sanctimonious sentimentality, and highfalutin & banal dialogues - all of which have gone past their expiry date.

The movie does not work due to two main reasons. 1. The constantly stressed romantic ideal in the movie that you know love is for real when you see GOD in the opposite sex should have been encapsulated in series of convincing scenes but what you get instead are dance sequence fashioned after stars of yore, irritating scenes passing of as funny, Raj fliring with Taani, endless sermons about pure & true love that is divine in its concept, etc. SRK wants her wife to love the character of Surinder and not Raj. But there is not a single scene showing Surinder making any effort to woo Taani barring the clumsily shot Sumo wrestling scene. Instead the movie has scenes galore of Raj flirting with Taani and professing love for her. How long can we really take one more film with a heroine begging her Raj to take her away? But Adi had to watch the BO prospects also as Raj’s antics would find favour among the youth and masses rather than the simpleton Surinders’.

Moreover there are no scenes that culminate in Taani developing a liking for Surinder except for the temple scene where Taani prays to God (heeding to Raj’s sermons of seeing GOD in person you love) and upon opening her eyes finds “Surinder†walking in front of her and voila she falls for the simpleton. Hence the tag line of the movie “Ordinary man’s extraordinary love story†does not make sense in the movie as the character of flamboyant Raj was given more prominence. By the way Mr. Adi, who told you that a common man or a modern man (flirts/studs) behave clumsily? Get real please. 2. While Adi wants the audience to be dumb to believe that Taani couldn’t recognize Raj from Surinder due to the makeover, he also wants us to be intelligent to understand Surinders’ love for Taani through antics of Raj.

Even if the director argues that SRK looked starkly different in both the characters but what about recognizing SRK by his voice, especially when they both meet daily. Is Adi suggesting that Indian audience need a brain-transplant? SRK fails to entertain the crowd with his buffoonery act. How long can the audience bear this aging star with the same antics movie after movie? He hams and overacts all the way whether as the simpleton Surinder with that constipated look or his rustic alter ego Raj wearing that clownish mien. It is sheer arrogance of SRK that is deluding himself that the audience would lap up any tripe he throws their way. Anushka Sharma acts decently. But she might just end up being a one film wonder as she does not look like the regular Bollywood heroine. Vinay Pathak overacts.

The music is insipid and lyrics inane. In short the songs suck. Barring editing (yawn) and art direction (fake sets), the other technical aspects of the movie are worthy of praise. In the preclimax scene Taani’s character tells SRK “I can’t take it any more†Well, the audience was feeling exactly like her at that point of time. To be fair there were two good scenes in the movie that are worth mentioning - the scene where Shahrukh Khan leaves his mobile number on the dining table and keeps a rose next to it, and again decides not to and the climax scene where “Surinder†dances with Taani instead of “Rajâ€. Haule haule ho jayega pyaar baliye, haule haule, croons SRK in the movie but it seems that the audience will start singing Haule haule ho jayega hate baliye, after watching this movie.

SRK’s movie released and I had to go to see it , come what may. Got the tickets booked in advance on Saturday eve. A huge queue in front of the ticket counter told everything , of course people were dying to see this flick. Needless to say , the theatre was houseful.

Plot - Everyone knows about the plot by now , hence I wouldnt be talking about it. I would like to say about how and what I felt during the movie and after it.

Movie started with a very calm , serene , holy and peaceful presentation , with a soft holy music in the background. Gave a very pleasing look and I kept appreciating YRF about their efforts. But the movie trails forward very very slowly , which makes it boring in the latter half and you want it to get over as soon as possible.

Its a very simple love story which tries to leave a mark on our hearts . About a guy who is deeply in love and his efforts to make his wife happy and basically , HIS’ , is worth appreciating. Atleast the way he tries to make her fall in love with him showed his true love for him.

Some moments from this film leave a lasting impression. The scene on the dining table with the rose, thescore of "Haule Haule" being played intermittently at regular intervalsfor little happiness’ of Suri, the Holi scene, the "Yellow Tiffin Box", the Biryanithing are few of them. You would feel for Taania to love Suri and not run away with Raj. And finally Suri’s happiness in Raj’s tears were worth watching.

Actors-

Shar Rukh Khan ( Surinder Sahni) - Well , he is able to play his magic in his own way. Adi has always been famous for giving larger than life movies , king size palaces and branded clothings. This is way different and SRK has just played the simplicity he had in Swades , just this time , he looks a bit mature and old to dance around with a teenager girl. Thats why I liked the dance sequence at the end , where he plays his real age and not a forced macho. It is fully logical to show that the movie was made for. SRK has his fans from all the agegroups. So , his fans might be a bit disappointed this time , coz after an year , we expected a lot lot more. His spikey look is for sure not good for him. But all in all , good job there SRK. After all it needs guts to play such a different role. I am sure you would have charged Adi with two hero’s money ;)

Anushka Sharma ( Taani) - Well , the most simple girl for this role to say so. She couldnt have been asked for more. She is naturally beautiful and her no- makeup or less- makeup tells so , so less that even her acnes were visible at some places. Nice dress designing for her , she looked like a typical punjabi girl for sure. She looks promising and dedicated and has way more to go.

Vinay Pathak (Balwinder Khosla / Bobby ) - Just this week I saw his Dasvidaniya and what a complete turn of roles. Its a unique role I agree but one thing is for sure , he is a versatile actor and is perfect for commercial and non-commercial cinema. Good going and ofcourse , he looks much better with that loss of weight.

Music- Songs are nice and good to see. The dance sequences in the movie are good and peppy and that multicasted song ( Chalte chalte mix) is also good . However one song which is to remember is "Tujhme rab dikhta hai " , I loved it.

I agree the movie has loads of loopholes but still since its an SRK movie and that too under YRF banner , people can not and will not miss it .

Overall , a disappointing movie , could have been better . But despite all this , I wouldnt be able to say "Dont Go For It " , rather its atleast worth watching once.

I have no idea, if it is true, why there have been mixed responses. I guess that is always true to a movie and a custom to a movie release. I am a Shah Rukh fan, but even for any non-Shah Rukh fan, your respect will only go up after this movie, and this new girl WATCH OUT FOR HER...she is a pocket house of talent. Beautiful songs, beautifully picturized, Shah Rukh Khan playing an insecure too "boring" ordinary guy for this hype girl who falls in love and love can make you do things you never expect. And it shows that you confidence comes with appearance, and you appear how you feel :) LOVED IT,,,,,,,,2 thumbs up (if i had more thumbs, i would add :) I remember coming out of Om Shanti Om and hating it, But for me this movie is one of my Shah Rukh's favorite. Lets believe it, "Bollywood" is an escape for most of ur desi, as @ the same time i am the biggest fan for artistic cinema of Gulzar, Mira Nair, Basu Bhattachariya, Shyam Benegal, etc.,,, i do enjoy commercial fun, as long as its good, and there is some "entertainement" which clearly Yuvraaj lacked....

Indeed a powerful comeback by SRK and Aditya Chopra... RNBDJ is in no way close to DDLJ... But still its fantastic and worth a watch. The most convincing part in the movie is the role of Surinder Sahni... and the never ending comedy...First Half and the climax is more enjoyable. In later half, there are some moments which might make one raise from his/her seat but as a whole movie, its fantastic movie. Anushka Sharma seems to be promising throughout the movie and she well supports the movie along with Vinay Pathak. Salim-Sulaiman have done a gud justice with the music. Film's Cinematography is awesome. You wont regret watching it!! Surely Go for it guys!!!!

My wife and I saw Rab Ne yesterday. Yes, this is a good movie, but not at the level of DDLJ, not even at the level of Mohabbatein. SRK is a great actor, Anushka is a great actress. However, there something missing in the movie. The storyline gives us a glimpse at the Satyam Shivam Sundaram story. The dancing by Kajol, Preity and others is now a routine thing in the movies, and therefore is not new, or exciting. Music is the worst part- typically YRF means great music. The music in Rab ne is good, but not at the same level as other YRF projects. The expectations from Adi were huge, and Rab ne is a complete let down.
