so....here we have mr. kashyap directing the first movie from the so called "psy" genre...the effort is more than appreciable ....i cant still figure out why so many people have treated the movie so harshly while reviewing this movie...or may be they could nt digest the successful implementation of the concept...AND WHO SAYS THE MOVIE DOES NT TALK ABT QUITTING SMOKING...EACH AND EVERY FRAME TRIES TO CONVEY THAT SO SIMPLY!!...JOHN DOES A MIND BLOWING JOB...BUT I HAVE SOME RESERVATIONS abt the screenplay...it seems patchy in various parts of the movie...and if mr. kashyap had spent a little more time on the final sequence,it would have made the film more impactful...but KUDOS to MR. KASHYAP TO SHOW HIS COURAGE AND MAKE THIS MOVIE... AND OF COURSE BRINGING THE HELL OUT OF KHALID MOHAMMAD...

I get 500 as my weekly pocket money and ive just seen this movie for the 3rd time in 3 days ..for all those who have reviewed this movie this badly ,ive an advice for you (Including the critics)-plz dont see or dont comment if you dont understand the movie. This was a complete MASTERPIECE by Mr. anurag kashyap which only a few can understand .i was not satisfied by Black Friday and i thought that this guy could have made it much better. No Smoking is better than black friday any day i appreciate his hard work for this movie..movies like this will be appreciated later (atleast 10-20 yrs later) .its still a long way to go in bollywood when ppl will start admiring such a kind of movie. If Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber's "The butterfly effect " would have been released in India (just an example),probably our audience and critics would have criticized it badly..and the way its been reviewed specially by khalid (HT) ,its horrifying .he himself made a movie like "tehzeeb" and who is he to review. I guess he was thrown out of the times of india because of writing such a movie.. POSITIVES :=BEST work of john ,cinematograhy is just too good, scintillating camera work and a perfect direction ,music also works well with a proper timing of background music.. NEGATIVES := Seen this 3 times ,but coudnt find one, phoonk de could have replaced the other song in bar grat work sir ,keek it going and i hope to see such movies in future (but the way it has crashed at the box-office ,i think you have to tie up with foreign production ,might do well outside)

ok come to the ponit direct,i tried too hard to understand and tell my mind that it's brilliant movie and till end i will surely understand the movie..and let me tell u i am not any "sadakchap" ,u might be thinking i am not supporter of different cinema.then let me tell u i am not like that. but despite of my whole attempt i couldn't understand what is going on,and befor i understand end credit were rolling. so may be i am not brilliant enough to understand "real different cinema" but i bet 99% of public will not....so why not make a movie of same subject in a manner which we "poor nasamjh janta" can understand. aakhir humne aapka kya bigada hai ?hum apne paise waste kar aisi film kyon dekhe jo samajh main hi naa aaye? sorry anurag i dont wanna hurt u,i have lot of respect you as a film maker.i liked black friday a lot.but i just couldn't digest it. next time please make such movie which we "less brain mortal"can understand..best wishes to you.

Wow, finally there is someone out there who tests the audience and at the same time explores the subconscious mind so beautifully that I felt I was dreaming, because that’s how dreams are and that’s what No Smoking is, the nightmare of a chain smoker. Well, all the people who said it was absurd and hopeless have you ever got a dream in which you thought you were dreaming? Let’s start with the beginning. Plato, Socrates and Sinatra (Do be do be do)…love this when I think about the movie. I shall not much talk about what happens on screen but you might have wondered if you have seen it already or if you haven’t, watch out for these things (My friend was thinking more about the movie after my hint. It’s his list.): 1. No door opens for a way out when K wants to runaway from Baba Bengali. Why? 2. And why is the same guy shown in different characters. Ever happened to you in dreams? Remember something? 3. The girl in the car is shown on the hospital bed. Well, subconscious mind can’t think of many different people. Ok, giving more of these things would spoil it for the people who haven’t watched. I can’t stop appreciating the guy who made it; for that matter any one can’t stop doing that once they get the point. Because it’s his proper understanding of the subconscious mind and applying that on an impulsive smoker combining this with a cool, slick look and a terrific sound track he delivers No Smoking. Kudos to you Anurag Kashyap. After listening to my fellow audience’s frustrated comments during some parts of the movie I thought of that musician’s character in Atlas Shrugged. What was his name? And yes this aint an only bouquets to you thing hold this brick too Anurag. Why was the Natural Born Killer’s sitcom parody brought in? That seemed a little out of place. But the Schindler’s List’s gas chamber scene and the mass bathing scene was subtle. Especially the frame when K looks up. I don’t know what reviewers see in a film when they write a review. Seems like there is a greater urgency in delivering their product. Unfortunately these kinds of things give the audience a wrong idea. In one line No Smoking is David Fincher and David Lynch having a hell of a party with Anurag Kashyap in desi style.

It's 2 'o clock at night , I'm tired sleepy and desperately want to go to sleep. But thanks to the official review of this movie on Indiafm I am forced to write this review. All I can say to the writer is that it's high time the movie critics grew up. The Indian film industry , which the reviewers are still ignorant enough to refer to as bollywood ,is growing up. And frankly speaking the press is just not being able to keep up with its pace. The last few years have seen movies like Life in a Metro , Black Friday , Swades , etc . All very different and very matured . I haven't even checked the review of the other big release this week Jab We Met. But I'm willing to bet my ass off that it will yield rave reviews and millions of kudos from the reviewers. And why not . It has got 7/8 songs(with the bonus of remixes of course) , plenty of candyfloss romance and features no sequence which could, even in the wildest of imaginations, be uncomfortable to the orthodox audience. Well , Indiafm can keep praising the same junk standardised generalised crap which keeps repeating itself over and over and over again .But then again what can u expect from reviewers who can rate a movie like AAG highly . But as a movie buff and a fanatic of noir movies I have to vehemently protest. Now , a few words about No Smoking. Firstly , just cause the name says No Smoking why does the world starts believing it's an anti smoking movie. Its just a freaking name. And if you think that names of movies should justify or define its contents well here are a few examples for you....how about Trainspotting , or Clockwork Orange or American Beauty.None of these movies were about the lives of a railway worker, an orange colored clock or a beauty pageant. No smoking is a visual trip through the dark alleys of the human mind . Its about the demons within you....the evils that form a part of your very soul and how it finally engulfs you so bad that to eradicate that evil you have to lose your soul. Its a Kubrickish effort where the director has formed a skeleton and then just went with the flow. Hats off to Anurag Kashyap for choosing a mundane topic and making it complicated and interesting .And not to mention , never selling out at even a single juncture .At no point in the movie did I feel that he had made any effort to make it appealing to the masses. Its just a rollercoaster ride in the lines of a Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or a Sin City. Surreal , funny , bold and giving a damn at to people who won't like the movie . Its that attitude which makes No Smoking different from its peers. The official review claims that what ails the film is that it is the most complicated cinematic experience of 2007.Damn Right it is !!! But that's why this movie is a winner all the way . The only correct sentence in the official review of No Smoking is "the film is like one big puzzle that refuses to get solved".And that is the beauty of this movie . That is exactly what puts it on a stack way above the mundane regular stuff. Why do we get into this hangover of a movie with a well-defined beginning , a highrise before the intervals and finally a climax which puts everything in order. Why can't a movie roll on its own and keep loose ends hanging even after it has ended. Stanley Kubrick did it all the time. Show me one person who would claim to have interpreted correctly the last scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey.Does that make it a bad movie . Can any of the so-called critics stand up and deny its "masterpiece" status. Although the real hero of this movie is its presentation but nevertheless , the cast of No Smoking renders a commendable effort. John Abraham has taken gigantic strides in acting and delivers a standout performance in a complicated role. Paresh Rawal , finally taking a break from running around in Priyadarshan movies , is excellent . Ayesha Takia is just there for the eye-candy factor. Ranvir Shorey is useless. The supporting cast is good , especially Paresh Rawal's sidekicks .The music is adequate and well executed. But the real winner is the cinematography . I have never seen such well-shot indoor sequences in a hindi movie. It appears straight out of Hollywood. The special effects are well placed and not over utilised . One last word of advice to Indiafm. PLEASE GET SOME FRESH REVIEWERS , who don't judge films based on the set principles and guidelines mentioned in a bible given to them by the Institute called YOU'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO DO IT , SO SCREW THE ONES WHO TRY
