'NH10', directed by Navdeep Singh, is about a road trip that goes horribly wrong when a young married couple crosses paths with a gang of ruthless killers on the national highway. It's a standard genre movie on the surface, and Singh does a good job of creating edge-of-the-seat tension. But he also layers the narrative with rich subtext, delivering so much more than your average thriller.I'm going with three-and-a-half out of five for 'NH10'. It's often terrifying on this highway, but you'll be glad you were there for the ride. It's easy to hate NH10 while watching it because it's one of the most terrifying Hindi films ever - while simultaneously, you love its brilliance. The film's story, apparently inspired by Eden Lake, is truly taut, no moment letting you relax, no layer - like Meera's vulnerability against both Arjun's ego and the vicious gang - comforting. NH10 is a relentless thriller you wish you could see with your eyes closed - because truly, as its song goes, chill gaye naina. But the suspension of disbelief is difficult when it comes to the leading lady, who, in her zeal to become a Killi Billi, throws the credibility switch. It's not that Sharma, who has also produced the film, is not trying hard. She is, and up to a point, she is in fine fettle. But at the point when she turns from flee to fight, I stopped believing. NH10 centres on an innocuous road trip that turns into a nightmare for a well-heeled Gurgaon couple. The film, however, holds its path right down to the shocking final moments.NH10 is an adventurous Bollywood film that breaks the shackles of convention and is none the worse for it. Eminently watchable. On the whole, NH10 is a wonderfully made film with an outstanding performance by Anushka Sharma. It will be well appreciatedby an intelligent audience that's gunning for women safety and empowerment. The sound cinematic credentials and gripping narrative is the high point of the film. But, as mentioned earlier, the glorification of violence isn't easy to stomach. You need to be really motivated to absorb it. This National Highway has its shares of potholes, but, it is a must visit. Do go the NH10 way!

Not a big fan of Anushka Sharma. However, I do have to appreciate the fact that she deigned to go offbeat and non-mainstream with her maiden production company's (Clean Slate - nice name) first foray into Indian film. Strange that Navdeep Singh has not directed a single movie since 8 years. His last one was desi Chinatown-lite, Manorama 6 feet under. As a genre, in spite of its various local-flavor trappings this owes a lot to 'Duel', 'Breakdown' and 'Joyride/Roadkill'. Anyways, thought I'd get that outta the way since they were gonna crop up anyways while referencing influences and whatnot. One more thing - this was the sanitized version of the movie I got to watch at the local cinema. As usual, the powers-that-be were inconsistent about the excisions, both on a few gory visuals, as well as the swearing. They were consistent about focusing on the swearing and not the gore, and were not saddled with nudity that would have perhaps been the first on the list. The infamous list also made its (non) appearance with all the word-mutings and the word- replacements. One of the best things about the flick is the sense of foreboding that pervades it, and ratchets up gradually, even from the first sequence where we realize that we're not gonna watch any candy-floss flick. That, along with a sense of groundedness throughout, are the movie's strengths, along with some inconsistently good cinematography, supported by good location-work and camera-work (inconsistent, since the lighting doesn't support the sequences where the movie is shot in the indoors of a car, except towards the end, when it seems like someone woke up to it before it reached the editing stage). The background score, and the (unnecessary, but thankfully short) tracks, were not as memorable as the ones in 'Badlapur' (comparing since that was also a gritty piece of work with a minimalistic, yet effective background score, and it would have been nice if adequate care was taken in that department for this flick as well). The performances are all good, though Naval doesn't get much time to showcase hers (good, within the scope of the plot though), and the transition the lead makes, in spite of her character's multiple mis- steps (more to do with the writing, IMO) over the course of the movie's slim runtime, are believable, and more importantly, evoke empathy amongst most of the audience (not including those who were audibly having fun when female characters were being physically abused - ugh). I also liked the way in which a little light got shone on the everyday reality of honor killing, and a particularly surprising conversation that occurs on the subject of caste. Very nicely handled, along with having an iron-hand-in-velvet-glove kinda approach, which kinda suited the subject, along with the context in which it was brought up, and their being inter-woven into the larger tale. There are 2 good instances of delicious irony in the flick, that go to illustrate how we need to understand a little more about the motivations of those who think are not being helpful, along with acknowledging surefire signs that things are (most definitely) gonna go south (though that often borderlines with being labeled paranoid, and we all know the curse of labeling motivating those who're defensive into tight corners from which there is no walking away). However, all that good things apart, in spite of the fact that this is an offbeat subject, certain things are resolved in a simplistic manner. Maybe good from the perspective of the revenge thriller genre, but considering the overall tone I thought the makers seemed to be striving for, there was a mismatch in the denouement. I do hope there's a sequel that can put right the mis-steps committed by the writers towards the end, but that is too much to expect. All in all, a good watch at the multiplex, but might not prove memorable as time goes by.

A nightmarish vacation packed with gruesome action and pulsating thrills. Its a horror-thriller which showcases the inequality of women in our society and the ill treatment dished out to them for deviating from the norms of "society". A slow paced action after an explosive opening. Gripping plot with good support cast. Dialogues and language are only for adults. A good watch not the usual merry go round off beat comedies thrown at your face. It's in tune with Hollywood thrillers although it is not well paced. However a good watch, Anuskha seemingly does well in her city girl avatar however, doesn't have that wild streak in her. Grab a bite and join the fun, start the engines and dive on NH10. Highlighting the our social-evils the movie succeeds in reforming the minds of our youth.

Arjun (neil) and Meera (anushka) are a happy couple with plush jobs in a big city but Meera suffers a jolt when an attempt to molest her takes place. In a bid to take her mind off that incident, Arjun decides to take her to a nice place to celebrate her birthday. They take the NH10 and it is here that they witness an honor killing led by Satbir (Darshan Kumar) and a group. Things take a turn with cops not cooperating and the killers after Arjun and Meera. At one point, Arjun gets deeply wounded and it is only Meera who has to take care of things. What happens after that forms the rest. The director has come up with a hard hitting storyline and while the presentation was nice, the narrative was engaging in parts. The dialogues were filled with expletives but they fit the scenario. The script was average to above and the screenplay was good. The background score was intense and one song was worth listening. Cinematography was the main strength to this film. Editing was upto the mark. Costumes didn't have much work while the art department was realistic. Neil Bhoopalam gave a subdued performance and made his presence felt. Anushka Sharma has evolved as a great performer in this one, she is spectacular, and to watch out for in the climax. Another revelation comes in the form of Darshan Kumar, he was superb. Deepti Naval was superb. The evil of honor killings still continue in the north India and it is tough to deal with such hardened people. But the way the principal characters deal with it has been done well. The first half goes on a breezy note with elements of some romance, some fun and some lighter moments. The interval bang was a twist. The second half gets into a completely serious mode and there is a lot of gore and blood which is raw. Overall, this is a film that talks about issues that plague India today. Things like Caste issues,Honour killing, and the need for women empowerment. And even minor loopholes in the script, and predictability withstanding NH10 is riveting, a fine film that needs to be watched for its positive message for women. Dir Navdeep Singh has made a real film, a film of todays times, but the films violence will be hard to stomach for some, but he needs to applauded for such a gripping, fast and raw film.Watch this film because it gives all the right messages of how India needs to change for the better.

Lighting up her cigarette with the matchstick lying deserted from its owner, Anushka, with the slightest hold on to the edge of her sanity and an enigmatic facial expression, picks up the inanimate steel built strut from the ground and with the shrill, clanging sound of the steel being dragged along the concrete road, she lays down the groundwork for her revenge. Navdeep Singh has not only made the most out of a road trip gone wild but has also filled in each of the scenes a continual thrill, of psyche driving in a meandering path of moral uncertainty and of the exceptional screenplay with Darshan Kumaar as the village ruffian and Sharma as the shackle breaker. Keeping itself as the very point of interest throughout its complete time span of a near-2 hour crime drama, the movie becomes more and more worthy of your extol as you seek deeper through the story. While staying perfectly true to realism, NH10, with excellent direction, a finely crafted story and brilliant performances, shines as Singh's undiluted masterpiece.
