Music Labels: Zee Music Company

Expectations:

With Himesh Reshammiya in form again in a big film, and the general appeal of the movie, the music has to be big - we all expect that.

Music:

And Himesh Reshammiya does score big too. This is the right juxtaposition of mass-friendly and pub-friendly instant crowd-puller songs that may not be enduring classics, but will act as heady and lively magnets for a great opening of this multi-star motion picture.

The lyrics are accomplished for this genre, smart, slickly contemporary and of course lightweight. Sameer Anjaan writes the two songs that are most dance-friendly, 'Caller Tune' (Neeraj Shridhar-Neeti Mohan) and 'Just Look Into My Eyes' (Ash King-Neeti Mohan). The use of English words and the presence of singers like Neeraj Shridhar and Ash King along with the intense tempo tempered with melody and refined orchestration is almost like stepping into Pritam territory. While Neeti Mohan is okay, Neeraj dominates the first track, while Ash makes a special effort in the latter song.

In short, these two songs are for the dance floor and its frenetic energy needs, with Himesh appealing to the teenyboppers.

Shabbir Ahmed gets to write the smart-alecky witty songs - 'Piya Ke Bazaar' (Himesh-Shalmali Kholgade) and 'Khol De Dil Ki Khidki' (Mika Singh-Palak Mucchal). While Himesh is in vocal form in the first song, which juxtaposes a desi groove and rhythmic whistles reminiscent of 'Jaave Saari Duniya' from Shortkut Romeo with a whiff of 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' from Policegiri, it is Shalmali, with her customary nasal twang, who acts as his perfectly piquant complement.

The rollicking 'Khol De Dil Ki Khidki' (Mika Singh-Pala Mucchal) is a full-on boisterous number with the heroes in drag. Palak is in her element in this peppy song. It is amazing how Himesh combines roots with contemporary touches to make songs that are friendly across demographics.

Mayur Puri brings in an element of quirky freshness ('Mere dil mein tu check-in ho gayi hai /Teri meri ab setting ho gayi hai /TV pe news breaking ho gayi hai') in the words of the weakest track on the score, 'Barbaad Raat' (Sanam Puri-Shalmali). Shalmali's no-holds-barred vocals are a stark contrast to Sanam's flat rendition. Sanam must improve his throw and sing deep if he has to make his mark.

Finally, Himesh's own rendition of 'Hum Pagal Nahin Hai Bhaiya', a typically Laxmikant-Pyarelal-esque composition (admitted as much by the composer) is full of verve, and a lot of the fizz also comes from the clever Anand Bakshi-ian lyrics - sample this: 'Daali pe phool nahin / Yeh meri bhool nahin /Kyaari mein khaad nahin / Khaad nahin khaad nahin'). We liked the relentless beat that pervades this masala song.

Overall:

A winner that will create a lot of buzz for the film, the score almost sees a reinvented Himesh Reshammiya as composer.

Our Pick:

'Caller Tune', 'Just Look Into My Eyes', 'Khol De Dil Ki Ladki'
