From the makers of Rang De Basanti, I have to say that the RDB director has missed it this time. Delhi-6 isnt flawless or atleast near perfect by any means. The soul, the effort is there. But the culmination and the plot does fall apart. The movie is good in bits and pieces. This would have been a disaster had it been a lengthy movie but its just 2.20 hours approx. Nevertheless the movie felt lengthy because there wasnt anything into it.
The Plot?
Roshan [Abhishek] comes to drop his ailing grandmother to Delhi so that she can succumb in her own land. Roshan who has been brought up in America falls in love with the city.
Well i donno how to explain the plot exactly cos actually even I'm confused what the actual plot is. Really the whole movie actually is ased on a KAALA BANDAR who wreaks havoc in the city. Though because of this the movie is hilarious and enjoyable at times but at interval you wonder,"What's the actual story yaar???" Entire first half is just on explaining the characters. The movie tightens its grips only in the second half when tensions arise between two communities. But the climax for some would be foolish and unexplained and for some it would be accepted. But for me I still had questions unanswered after the movie.
Alright enough of the negative aspects. There are a lot positives from here. The music from A.R. Rahman. Had it not been for his wonderful soundtrack this movie would be hell of a bore. All of the songs are just lovely and equally the best. None of them are the fast forward types. Masakali, Arziyan, Yeh Delhi Hai, Rehna Tu are the best picks.
Binod Pradhan's cinematography is awesome. Delhi is wonderfully captured and also the Jama Masjid sequence is incredible. Certain scenes in the movie are enjoyable. A bit of humour.
On the acting front, Abhishek is good but its not his finest. Sonam is better than in Saawariya and she looks gorgeous too. Waheeda Rehman and Rishi Kapoor are good. Om Puri is brilliant. Same with the rest of the cast. All perform as expected.
The love plot between Abhishek-Sonam is not appealing in fact its not much to talk about. It doesnt make any impact. But the certain characters of the movie are certainly interesting.
If you have high expectations from this movie then they are certainly gonna be shattered. This by no means is better or even half as better than Rang De Basanti's standard. I suggest save your precious money and just watch it at home when the original dvd or vcd's come out.
Regarding how the people will react to the movie. Its gonna be mixed. The attendance for the movie will fall as days pass and it will be hard whether it can emulate the success of RDB.... But Rakeysh has tried to teach us moral values from his film but had he used better means then this would have worked.
