A few years ago a guy named ‘Munna Bhai’ decided to follow the paths created by ‘Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’, and boy how well he did it! This same guy before that had graduated from a medical college in the most unique way. The year is 2009 and enters ‘Rancho’, who just wants to convey one message ‘Follow your heart, be what you want to be! Don’t end up becoming what the system wants you to become’ - ‘Saala kaabil bano, success apne aap tumhare piche bhagegi’.
Rajkumar Hirani and gang have it again. By the simplest and the easiest way they have asked you to ‘uncover your own destiny’. A word of caution though, for all those who go the theatres expecting to see ‘Five point someone’, are in for a big surprise or rather disappointment. The movie is seriously “Inspired†from the book. But more on that later, we are talking about the movie right now.
Two friends or idiots Raju (Sharman Joshi) and Farhan (R.Madhavan) set out on a journey in search of a long lost third idiot Rancho (Aamir Khan) who in a very unusual way changed their lives to an extent that they found success or rather success ran after them. This journey ultimately drives us down their memory lane through their stories from ice a.k.a Imperial college of engineering. This journey is all about Rancho and his way of life. Along come Pia (Kareena Kapoor) and Virus a.k.a Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani) who spice it up. And then one mission of finding Rancho also leads to uniting long lost lover which in turn leads to breaking a marriage.
Right from the start of the movie – where the quest begins – story keeps you stuck to your seats. A story filled with emotions, sorrow, joy and laughter in way never invented before. Some sequences though actually make you fall of your seats with laughter. For instances, the scene with the teacher’s day speech or the ragging sequence at the beginning. While the soft sequences are brilliantly crafted like the one when the Rancho and Raju reunite after a small argument. Music of the movie is good but hushed up at the beginning itself.
Now the performances – and one truly understands what commitment means. Each and everyone its seems gave their 200% to this films. Sharman Joshi , Madhavan and Aamir Khan are the soul of the movie. To say the movie is about Aamir Khan would be a huge understatement. True, the movie is about ‘Rancho’ but not Aamir Khan. The movie is nothing without all the 3 idiots put together. Kareena Kapoor - whose appearance is a mere handful - is substantial for the film. Omi is brilliant too. And Boman Irani delivers one of his finest as the institute director. You’ll forget Dr.Asthana from Munna Bhai M.B.B.S once you watch Virus. Others like Parikshit Sahani, Jaaved Jaafri are fine too. Mona Singh is ok. But the most important thing is, one cannot imagine anyone but these actors playing their particular roles.
Now to 5 point someone. Yes the movie is inspired from the book but only like those parts which do not form the core of the book like the suicide attempt by one of the three, the background of the lead lady of the story, Raju’s family background etc. Eliminating the characters from the book and replacing them with Rancho, Raju and Farhan has worked big time for the movie.
The flaws – yes the movie contains some. The speed slows down bit in the second half. While some sequences after the interval are pretty much “Bollywoodishâ€, especially the one with the baby delivery. Something else might have worked there. And the one where the director decides stop someone from going further in life by setting a tough paper himself seems ureal. Barring these, nothing wrong with the movie.
To conclude, after Munna bhai Raju Hirani has created a masterpiece. And folks please keeps this in mind he become the first person to make movies related to the two most popular professional coursed in the country today – M.B.B.S and Engineering. All in all ‘3 Idiots’ is simply the best movie – if not ever – this year. Heading into new year everyone going to have a new mantra on his/her lip “ALL IZZ WELLâ€.
