SS Rajamouli’s atheist confession at Varanasi announcement event incites internet’s ire
At the event announcing his new opus Varanasi in Hyderabad on November 15, filmmaker SS Rajamouli confessed to being an atheist, and added, “When my father talked about Hanuman and suggested relying on His blessings for success, I got angry.”
The confession of being a non-believer compounded by a dig at Lord Hanuman has provoked netizens into widespread protest.
The remarks on religion seem especially inappropriate considering Rajamouli has drawn heavily and generously from Hindu mythology in Baahubali, RRR and now Varanasi.
When this writer approached a source close to Rajamouli regarding this unexpected turn of events at the event, the source defended Rajamouli for “only speaking his mind”.
“We don’t have to be religious to make films on Gods and religion. Likewise, Raja’s personal belief has no bearing on his cinema. In fact, he should not have spoken about his personal religious beliefs at the public event. We were all surprised,” said the insider.
