Sigourney Weaver on joining The Star Wars universe with The Mandalorian and Grogu, "I was amazed by it and fell in love with it"

Sigourney Weaver, an actor long associated with science fiction through her work in the Alien franchise, Ghostbusters, Galaxy Quest, and Avatar, is entering the galaxy far, far away for the first time with Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. She plays Colonel Ward, a New Republic officer who tasks Din Djarin and his little green son Grogu with tracking down Imperial warlords who are resisting the end of the Empire.

Ahead of the film's release, Weaver spoke about joining the franchise and her affection for its characters. "I was, of course, amazed by it and fell in love with it, and Pedro and Grogu," she said. She also revealed that she had long wanted to play a military leader, saying, "I have so much respect for women in the armed services, their grace under pressure, their ability to make good judgments and follow their instincts and intuitions, and be very good commanders. I've always wanted to play someone like that."

 

The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.

 

Directed by Jon Favreau, the film stars Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, and Jeremy Allen White, and is written by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Noah Kloor. It is produced by Jon Favreau, p.g.a., Kathleen Kennedy, p.g.a., Dave Filoni, p.g.a., and Ian Bryce, p.g.a., with Karen Gilchrist, John Bartnicki, and Carrie Beck serving as executive producers and music composed by Ludwig Göransson.

 

Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, filmed for IMAX, releases exclusively in theatres on Friday, May 22, 2026, in English and Hindi.
