Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won starrer Queen of Tears amasses 689.5 million hours of viewership, makes it most streamed K-drama on Netflix in first half of 2024
In December 2023, Netflix unveiled its first comprehensive engagement report, showcasing extensive viewing statistics from the initial half of the year. This marked the platform's commitment to transparency and audience engagement, offering insights into over 18,000 titles. Since then, additional reports have followed, detailing viewership patterns for the latter half of 2023 and the beginning of 2024, allowing fans and industry analysts alike to dive into a wealth of data. One standout from this period is the romantic Korean drama series, Queen of Tears, featuring the talented Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won. Since its debut on March 9 and concluding on April 28 of this year, the series has set remarkable benchmark as the most-streamed Korean drama in the early part of 2024.
Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won starrer Queen of Tears amasses 689.5 million hours of viewership, makes it most streamed K-drama on Netflix in first half of 2024
According to the platform’s biannual statistics, as reported by What's On Netflix, Queen of Tears achieved a staggering total of 689.5 million hours of viewing time. This phenomenal figure places the series at the forefront of K-dramas, surpassing numerous other popular titles.
For context, it outperformed the likes of My Demon (2024)—starring Song Kang and Kim Yoo Jung—with 311.2 million hours, True Beauty (2020) featuring Cha Eun Woo, Moon Ga Young & Hwang In Youp at 293.5 million hours, Doctor Slump (2024) with Park Hyung Sik and Park Shin Hye garnering 258.1 million hours, and Welcome to Samdalri (2023) led by Ji Chang Wook and Shin Hye Sun, which attracted 199.2 million hours.
Following Queen of Tears, several other Korean productions also made their mark. Parasyte: The Grey secured 25 million views, while 'My Demon' and Doctor Slump' followed with 18 million and 14 million views, respectively.
At the heart of Queen of Tears lies a narrative centered around the lives of a married couple, Hong Hae-in and Baek Hyun-woo. Portrayed by Kim Ji Won and Kim Soo Hyun, respectively, the story begins on a promising note, as Hong, an heiress of the affluent Queen's Group, weds Baek, the company's legal director. Their seemingly perfect union faces turmoil three years into their marriage, forcing them to navigate a series of emotional trials that challenge their commitment to one another and their individual aspirations.
In addition to the success of 'Queen of Tears,' the action film Badland Hunters, featuring the acclaimed Don Lee (also known as Ma Dong-seok), emerged as the most viewed Korean film on Netflix. It secured the 17th spot on the platform's list of the most-watched films overall. Notably, however, no Korean titles managed to break into the top 10 most-watched list, a trend that has persisted since the latter half of the previous year.
According to the biannual report, non-English productions accounted for nearly a third of the total viewing among the top 10 titles, underscoring the rising global appetite for diverse content.
