Josh Brolin opens up about his villainous turn in The Running Man and working with Edgar Wright

Actor Josh Brolin, who stars as the antagonist in Edgar Wright’s upcoming film The Running Man, opened up about what drew him to the role and why his character stands out as a compelling villain. Brolin plays Dan Killian, the manipulative mastermind behind a deadly survival reality show, facing off against Glen Powell’s character.

During the global promotions, Brolin explained to Rolling Stone, “Dan Killian runs everything. I don’t know if he created the show, but he’s the puppet master, manipulating situations to get the best ratings. He knows what people want to see – whether contestants can live up to their potential – and most of them can’t.”

 

When asked why he accepted the role, Brolin credited both director Edgar Wright and the ensemble cast. “Edgar, first and foremost. Glenn and Colman were also a big draw. I’d seen Glen in Top Gun: Maverick and Colman in Sing Sing, and I thought they were excellent. Edgar and I have a long history, so there’s a shorthand with him that you don’t usually get with other directors. He’s proven to be a great filmmaker, and I trust his vision.”

 

Reflecting on his experience on set, Brolin said, “It’s a strong cast. I’ve been fortunate to work with professional, talented actors. Glen, Colman, Lee Pace – they all know their craft and bring energy to the set. I didn’t get to work with Michael Cera directly, but he was fantastic. Working with people who are prepared and focused makes the experience much more rewarding.”

 

The Running Man follows Ben Richards, a man who enters a deadly reality competition to save his sick daughter. Contestants must survive 30 days to win $1 billion, while elite Hunters, including McCone, attempt to eliminate them.

 

The Running Man is produced by Paramount Pictures and is scheduled for release in theatres on 14th November.
