Vishal Dadlani takes indirect dig at Dhurandhar The Revenge over demonetisation portrayal: “A film is just entertainment. Facts are facts”

Singer-composer Vishal Dadlani has reacted to the portrayal of demonetisation in Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar The Revenge, which released in theatres on March 19 and stars Ranveer Singh in the lead role. While the film has been performing strongly at the box office, it has also drawn criticism in some quarters over portions of its narrative that appear to justify the government’s 2016 demonetisation move, during which Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes were withdrawn overnight.

Although Vishal Dadlani did not directly name the film in his posts, he appeared to reference it through a series of Instagram Stories reacting to discussions around demonetisation and its portrayal in popular culture. The connection became more apparent as he used the song ‘Jaiye Sajna’ by Satinder Sartaaj, a track featured in Dhurandhar The Revenge, alongside screenshots of reports examining the real-world impact of the policy.

 

One of the statements shared by him read, “The high percentage of cash return led to widespread analysis that the move failed to permanently eliminate a large portion of ‘black money’ from the economy, as intended (sic).”

 

Commenting on the debate around the issue, Vishal wrote in another Story, “In light of the new BS doing the rounds, it's important to remember that… A film is just entertainment. Facts are facts no matter what (sic).”

 

He also shared another analysis referring to the continuing security challenges after 2016, noting that major incidents such as the 2019 Pulwama attack and other disturbances took place despite the policy being aimed in part at curbing terror funding networks. Alongside the post, he added, “Watch films for fun, but get your information from better sources (sic).”

 

 

In Dhurandhar The Revenge, the demonetisation decision is presented under a fictionalised name, Operation Green Leaf, and is shown as part of a strategic effort to disrupt terror financing channels.
