Responding to former FTC Chair Lina Khan’s observation that we are in an “AI bubble,” filmmaker Shekhar Kapur shared a more nuanced perspective on the forces shaping today’s artificial intelligence narrative. According to Shekhar Kapur, “We are not going through an AI bubble. We are going though a manipulated valuation bubble. Valuation is a story that if told long enough becomes a myth.”

He explains that AI itself isn’t the issue the real problem lies in the inflated expectations and speculative capital surrounding it. Drawing a parallel to the real estate boom, where homes soared to astronomical prices and became mere assets caught in cycles of greed and collapse, Kapur suggests that AI, too, is being swept into a similar vortex of valuation and hype.

 

 

 

Shekhar Kapur views AI as one of the most democratic technologies of our time a tool capable of enhancing productivity, creativity, and equality when used responsibly. “AI is here to stay,” he asserts, emphasizing that technologies inevitably outlast market cycles. What might appear today as a speculative frenzy, he believes, could ultimately lay the groundwork for a more intelligent and efficient society.

 

As Kapur gears up for his upcoming project Masoom: The Next Generation, his reflections serve as a timely reminder to separate the lasting technological revolution from the transient myths spun by market speculation.
