MAMI Masterclass: Shabana Azmi feared people would walk out during ‘Abhi Na Jao’ scene in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani: “I told Karan Johar, ‘You are mad’…”

Shabana Azmi had an interesting conversation with Vidya Balan at a masterclass held at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024 on October 19. Shabana Azmi, who completes 50 years as an actor this year, spoke about her fascinating journey. As expected, she spoke about her recent film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023).

She said, “I really enjoyed working on Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. In the very first scene, I had an open hair. I was given this ridiculously long wig. My hair was on one side and I was wearing a silk saree while making machi kadhi. I asked Karan Johar, ‘Which Bengali woman wears a silk saree and opens her hair and all that?’! He replied, ‘In Karan Johar’s film, she does. Don’t ask any questions. Just go ahead’ (laughs)!”

 

Shabana Azmi continued, “I had a thought in my head that I’ll play her like Aparna Sen. Manish Malhotra, however, said, ‘No, no, you have to trust me’. I am really glad I did it because that’s what worked for the film. It was a completely different experience for me.”

 

Her most memorable scene in the film is when she kisses Dharmendra while they both also sing an old classic song. Shabana Azmi revealed, “When I was told about ‘Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar’ scene, I told Karan, ‘You are mad. People are going to walk out and they are going to laugh’. But when I went to the theatres, I heard whistles and claps in that scene!”
