EXCLUSIVE: Suresh Triveni reveals why Daldal is a ‘Why-Done-It’ and not a 'Who-Done-It'

In an exclusive discussion with Bollywood Hungama, the creators of Daldal made it clear that their series was never designed as a conventional crime thriller. Director Suresh Triveni articulated its core philosophy in one line, “It’s not a who-done-it. It’s a why-done-it.”

Unlike traditional thrillers that rely on suspense around identity, Daldal is driven by motivation and psychology. Host Rohit Khilnani echoed this sentiment, adding, “That’s what sets it apart. It’s not just another series. It keeps going back to why something happened.”

 

Writer Amrit Raj Gupta explained that understanding the internal worlds of the characters was the biggest challenge. “To understand these two women was the most difficult part of the show; why they’re doing what they’re doing. That’s where the story lives.”

 

Interestingly, even Triveni found the material unsettling. “I can’t watch things that make me uncomfortable. Daldal is probably the only piece of work I sat through because I was part of it and it made me uncomfortable.” That discomfort, however, is intentional. The show forces viewers to sit with moral ambiguity, suppressed rage and fractured psyches. There are no easy heroes or villains only damaged individuals shaped by circumstance.

 

By choosing the “why” over the “who,” Daldal challenges viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about trauma, power and choice. It’s a bold narrative decision; one that elevates the series beyond genre tropes and firmly places it in the realm of psychological drama.
