“I discovered love by being part of Angel” – Maddalsa Sharma

In rare instances an actress makes such an impression in only a few brief scenes in the first promo of a film, that the energy of her work carries her all the way being compared to the likes of Sridevi in Sadma and Hrithik in Guzaarish. On meeting the debutant actresses of our Hindi Film Industry, I always get a bit excited. Not that I want to charm them with my talks, oh no! It's like, every time, I see a new vision and a new reason for them to enter the profession they truly love - acting. It happened when I first met Deepika Padukone, it happened when I first met Sonam Kapoor and it happened when I first met Anushka Sharma. It's another story that I did propose the latter for marriage. But Maddalsa didn't have to worry. I was well behaved. And what fascinated me was her unique name. So what does Maddalsa mean? "It means Goddess", the sweet actress answers. She's got a beautiful smile which compliments her good cute looks. She is not afraid to speak her heart out and again tells me, "I could've done a supporting role in an ensemble film but I decided to go with Angel because not many are privileged with a physically challenged role in their debut film. It will showcase my acting prowess and that's the start I was looking forward to." Didn't I say she speaks her heart out? UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent introduces the newest impression on celluloid, Maddalsa.

"I discovered love by being a part of Angel"

I actually discovered love by being a part of Angel. When you are involved in a kind of subject like Angel, you not only discover love, but much more than that. It is a gradual process of self discovery in a way.

"When I gave my screen test, I didn't know the story of Angel nor my character"

When Ganesh Acharya called me for a screen test, he didn't reveal anything about the story of Angel. I was clueless. He just told me to imitate everything that he does. Initially I was very hesitant and found it very weird because he was doing some physically challenged actions. I somehow knew where it was leading me to. I followed his instructions and did it. The next day he called me with my parents to show me the screen test I had done. That's when he narrated me the story of Angel and signed me for my first Hindi film.

I always wanted to start off my career where I got noticed as an actor and as a performer. Angel is a performance oriented film. Yes, my comparisons are straightaway done with the likes of Hrithik Roshan from Guzaarish and Sridevi from Sadma because both were physically challenged roles. That's a big motivation for a fresher like me. Angel has given me my glamorous side and my acting side. Ganesh Acharya made me dance, laugh and cry.

"Nilesh has no tantrums"

Nilesh is a very good human being. His certain mannerisms do match that of his mamu Sanjay Dutt (laughs), when he walks and talks. But working with him was quite an experience. He is a chilled out guy and has no tantrums. We both are new comers and we could relate to each other a lot. We were sailing in the same boat.

"I used to go for two weeks to Nanavati Hospital for my research"

During my workshop days, I used to go to Nanavati hospital and personally see patients who were suffering from Cerebral Palsy. For two weeks I studied their mannerisms and by the end of fourteen days, I used to get depressed seeing the patients. But that was the only way I could've got my character right in the film. Those two weeks quite emotional and have had a huge impact on my life.

"I'd like to work with Aditya Chopra and Abbas Mustan"

My favourite actor from our film fraternity is Ajay Devgn and my favourite actress is Madhuri Dixit. My favourite film is Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. I'd like to work with Aditya Chopra, Abbas Mustan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
