Becoming a social media influencer has been a success mantra for many out there. But filmmaker and producer Karan Johar, while speaking on Sarthak Ahuja’s podcast, has cautioned them on not being under the impression that this is going to last forever.
While giving advice to influencers, Johar said, “Firstly, ask yourself, ‘Did I do this because this is the easy way out? Did I do this because I have a smart phone and I can do this from my house and it’s the easy way out because I have gone sensational, controversial, in-your-face, have met with followers, likes and engagement? Is this the easy way out or is this genuinely my talent?’ The first thing is, if this is your easy way out, then please make sure you have a Plan B because this will not last. This will die. There will be 18000 others who will come with the same beginning that you had, which was ‘this was my easy way out’.”
While giving an example of Tanmay Bhat, he added, “Secondly, you must have a Plan B in any case because content creation can also lead to immediate digital exhaustion. How much can you keep doing? You have to diversify within what you do. For example, Tanmay Bhat started off as a stand up, then went into development but today he is a mastermind advisor to some of the leading houses of the industry, giving them campaign ideas. He is also diversifying.”
Johar stressed on the point that one can’t keep making videos for Instagram and YouTube and think that this is going to last forever. “It will last 5 years, 10 years but then what? There will be exhaustion, you will reach a plateau and then you will not know what to do. There will be AI and something else will happen and other technology will take over. And at one point you will say, ‘Oh Instagram is passé now, who is on Instagram anymore?’ Then what will happen? Look what happened to TikTok. It just vanished and people moved to Instagram.”
