For Riddhi Kumar, Superboys of Malegaon is not just another project on her resume. As the film marks one year since its release in 2025, the actress looks back at it with a sense of pride and quiet gratitude. Riddhi played Mallika in the much-loved film, which went on to earn widespread appreciation from audiences for its honesty and emotional depth.
Speaking about the response the film received, Riddhi did not hesitate to admit that she believed in its impact from the beginning. “If I'm being honest, yes, I did expect the film to receive the kind of love and appreciation that it got,” she said. For her, the reason was simple. “Because the film was made with a lot of love and appreciation towards the people that the film tries to represent, and the story that it tries to represent,” she explained.
Riddhi described Superboys of Malegaon as more than just a film. “Superboys of Malegaon is almost like an ode to a group of friends who were the superboys of a village called Malegaon, which is near Nasik, where a group of young men came together through their passion for cinema and storytelling to create a different world for the people in the village, for their own community.”
She spoke warmly about how these young men created their own version of cinema. “They created their own Mollywood, like Malegaon-Bollywood sort of a scenario, and I just feel like they did a wonderful job at doing so. The story is so inspiring, it is based on real-life events, which is why it strikes a chord in the hearts of others.”
One memory that still stays with her is the screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. “Nasir Shaikh (film was inspired by his life), when he came to TIFF, where the film was screened, he was so emotional, and the entire cast and crew got so emotional. I knew that it would happen because of the people involved in the film and what it represented,” she shared.
Beyond the applause and praise, the film left a deeper mark on her. Reflecting on her journey after the project, Riddhi said, “It definitely induced a sense of added appreciation and seriousness towards the craft.”
She admitted that the story made her rethink effort and privilege. “I felt like people from such small towns who don't even have the opportunities and such resources, yet they try to create their own world literally and do their best in whatever they can do and have. Us, coming from relatively more privileged backgrounds and opportunities, actually should work harder.”
That thought stayed with her long after the shoot wrapped up. “I feel like that made me want to work harder, be more creative, more than anything,” she added. “Personally and professionally, it helped me be more creative in my choices, in the things that I do, the way I express myself, and be more passionate about what I do, and cinema in general.”
A year later, Superboys of Malegaon continues to be a film that Riddhi holds close to her heart. Not just because it was appreciated, but because it reminded her why she chose to be part of cinema in the first place.
