Karan Johar talks highly of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani lead actor Ranveer Singh: “Deepika Padukone tells me that every six months, a new person walks into the house”

Ranveer Singh has been one of the most popular actors of our generation ever since he made a stunning debut with Band Baaja Baaraat (2010). Between January 2018 and February 2019, he delivered three major hits – Padmaavat (2018), Simmba (2018) and Gully Boy (2019). Sadly, this was followed by three consecutive flops – ’83 (2021), Jayeshbhai Jordaar (2022) and Cirkus (2022). With Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, his spell of flops was broken. Directed by Karan Johar, this romantic family drama was a huge hit and also a critical success.

During an interaction held by Pinkvilla, Karan Johar spoke highly of Ranveer Singh. He said with a lot of pride, “Working with Ranveer Singh was an amazing and exuberating experience. He’s a juggernaut of talent. He’s something else. He’s a chameleon. He can go from Khilji to Murad to Rocky to Kapil Dev.” Then referring to Ranveer’s wife, superstar Deepika Padukone, KJo quipped, “Deepika tells me, ‘Every six months, a new person walks into the house’!”

Karan then explained how Ranveer goes into the skin of the character, “He becomes that character. He would talk like Rocky throughout. I felt like I was talking to Rocky Randhawa and not Ranveer Singh. He would say, ‘Hows you’, ‘Ranveer Singh this side’! I was like, ‘Oh god! I am not able to have a normal conversation with this guy’! It was phenomenal and I am so grateful to him.”

Karan Johar also analysed the box office trends of 2023. The Bollywood industry suffered due to multiple debacles in 2022. But in 2023, things changed for the better. Karan explained that big-screen entertainers or sequels were the ones that saw success at the ticket window, “Everything that has worked has been an event film, be it Jawan, Pathaan or Gadar 2. Then Dream Girl 2 and Fukrey 3 were sequels. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani worked purely on the strength of its word of mouth. We didn’t open to a grand number. But the film got the love and hence, it went on to do the business that it eventually did.”
