2023 is a special year for Karan Johar. This year, he completed 25 years in the industry. 2023 is also the year when his directorial venture, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, was released and was not just a critical success but also a commercial one. It starred Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi and was loved for its entertainment quotient, songs, performance and progressive themes.
Until now, all of Karan Johar’s directorials starred Shah Rukh Khan or featured him as a producer. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is the first KJo film as a director that doesn’t have SRK's association in any capacity. Karan was asked about it at an interaction held by Pinkvilla.
Karan revealed that his team was tempted to have a cameo of SRK. He also explained why he chose not to do so. Karan Johar began by saying, “The entire AD team told me that in the song ‘Tum Kya Mile’, the best moment should be that I track away from Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh and go to Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, singing the same song. Ranveer and Alia look at them and the latter realizes that this is pure love as they represent love.”
He laughed as he then said, “I realized that with what kind of guts do I have to ask Shah Rukh to not only do a cameo but to come to Kashmir!”
On a serious note, KJo explained, “Shah Rukh never says ‘No’ to me. I remember when we asked him to play that massive, impactful cameo in Brahmastra (2022), he looked at us and said, ‘It’s Karan, no? I can never say No’! I know that I can’t take that empowered feeling for granted. I can’t keep going back. I knew that for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), who other than Shah Rukh could say ‘Ek tarfa pyaar ki taakat hi kuch aur hoti hai’.”
Karan Johar continued, “I asked him to do that role and he agreed. He also agreed to do the role in Brahmastra. So, I have to pick and choose my favours. Hence, this one (the cameo in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani), I let it go as I felt embarrassed to ask him.”
Karan finally added, “He gave nearly 12 to 14 days for Brahmastra. He didn’t charge a penny. He was there with full love and energy. He has a king-sized heart in him as well.”
