Karan Johar revisited the casting of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, his directorial debut, during the premiere episode of Koffee With Karan Season 9. The filmmaker revealed how Salman Khan agreed to play a special appearance in the film after several leading actors had turned down the role.
Recalling how the collaboration came about, Johar shared that Khan had casually told him, “You’ve been shopping, come narrate the film to me tomorrow.” Following the conversation, Johar visited the actor at his apartment to narrate the story. Khan, who was dressed in yellow shorts at the time, agreed to be part of the film without listening to the complete narration.
Johar also revealed that Khan was willing to take up the role despite being told that there would be no remuneration for his special appearance. The actor's decision came at a time when Johar was looking to finalise the casting for his debut directorial venture.
During their conversation, the two also spoke about the longstanding bond between their families. Johar recalled how his father had personally travelled to Mauritius to help secure government permissions for Khan's then-ongoing shoot for Hello Brother. The anecdote offered a glimpse into the relationship shared by the two families over the years.
The conversation also brought back memories of an unexpected technical issue during the climax sequence of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The camera operator accidentally filmed the entire sequence in slow motion, leaving the team with no option but to reshoot it.
Despite having another shoot lined up, Khan reportedly postponed his next day's schedule by a day to remain on set and complete the sequence. His decision allowed the team to reshoot the scene, reflecting the support he extended to Johar during the making of the film.
The premiere episode of Koffee With Karan Season 9 revisits these moments from the making of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, offering a glimpse into how the collaboration came together and the friendship between the filmmaker and the actor.
New episodes of Koffee With Karan Season 9 drop every Wednesday at 7 PM, exclusively on JioHotstar.
