Ammy Virk, a prominent figure in the Punjabi entertainment industry, has come forward to defend his fellow artist Diljit Dosanjh amidst controversy surrounding Dosanjh's portrayal in Imtiaz Ali's biopic on Amar Singh Chamkila. Dosanjh's decision to not wear a turban in the film sparked a debate regarding Sikh identity and cultural representation. In an exclusive interview with IndiaToday.in, Virk expressed his support, stating, "The film was like that where he had to show that look."

Virk elaborated on the artistic choices behind Dosanjh's portrayal, emphasizing the need for authenticity in character depiction. He explained, "The film was based on Chamkila and what we know is that he did cut his hair, but at the same time, he also wore a turban sometimes. Now, if Imtiaz sir is making a biopic on Chamkila, the character and the film demand that look. As Imtiaz sir said, Diljit didn’t cut his hair, it was a wig."

Furthermore, Virk highlighted Dosanjh's commitment to his craft and Sikh pride, asserting that Dosanjh's decision was not influenced by monetary gains. "Diljit didn’t cut his hair for the film or the money, he would not do that. Moreover, the most important thing is to see where Diljit has actually taken that ‘pagadi’ (turban). When he was performing at Coachella, he was wearing the pagadi. He is making us so proud, the stadiums are full because of Diljit," Virk emphasized.

Despite the controversy, Imtiaz Ali had earlier clarified Dosanjh's portrayal, revealing that Dosanjh wore a wig for the movie. Ali stated, "I would not want to share his personal details, but yes, Diljit has worn a wig. That wig is like his turban only. He has not sacrificed a single hair for this film." With Dosanjh's performance garnering praise, the biopic continues to resonate with audiences, having premiered on Netflix in April to positive reception.
