Vijay to QUIT cinema for politics; announces new political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam

In a highly anticipated announcement, popular Tamil actor Vijay, often referred to as Vijay Thalapathy, officially launched his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), meaning "Tamil Nadu's Victory Party." The announcement was made through a detailed statement shared on the actor's official X account (formerly Twitter).

In his statement, Vijay acknowledged the ongoing social work of his fan club, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, but emphasised the need for political power to enact systemic change. He cited "a dysfunctional administration and corrupt political culture" existing alongside "divisive politics" as key deterrents to progress in Tamil Nadu.

 

"It is incontestable truth that people, more so in Tamil Nadu, are longing for a change in a political scenario and want a selfless, honest, secular and talented party to bring about a change," the statement read, shared X (formerly Twitter).

 

He expressed his desire to serve the people who have bestowed upon him "name, fame, and everything," stating, "It is my long-term intention and desire to help the people of Tamil Nadu and the Tamil community."

 

Vijay announced his intention to contest in the 2026 state legislative assembly elections, aiming to fulfil the "desired political transformation sought by the people of Tamil Nadu." He elaborated that party policies, manifestos, and strategies will be unveiled upon the approval of the election ordinance.

 

The statement confirmed Vijay's full-time commitment to politics, necessitating his departure from cinema after completing his current project. Greatest Of All Time, under director Venkat Prabhu, will be his final film. He added, "Therefore, my prolonged commitment to politics is not merely a profession but a sacred duty to the people. Politics, in my perspective, is not a pastime; it is my profound endeavour."
