Rashmika Mandanna opens up about her parents' initial hesitation over her acting career: "In South Indian families, entering the film industry was considered wrong."
Actress Rashmika Mandanna recently reflected on her South Indian roots, revealing her family’s early hesitation toward her pursuing a career in films and the emotional path that unfolded.
Rashmika Mandanna opens up about her parents' initial hesitation over her acting career: "In South Indian families, entering the film industry was considered wrong."
Speaking to We The Women, Rashmika shared, “Dad wanted me to join his business,” adding that acting was never considered a viable career option during her upbringing.
After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Psychology, and English Literature, Rashmika Mandanna found herself equally interested in the media field. “It would have been lovely either way,” she remarked when it was suggested that she could have pursued journalism. However, her father envisioned a different path for her, hoping she would join and contribute to the family business. Coming from a traditional South Indian background, the prospect of entering the film industry was initially met with skepticism and concern.
Reflecting on her parents’ perspective, Rashmika said, “I think in South Indian families, at least back in the day, entering the film industry was considered wrong. They didn’t understand how it worked.” As an only child for 16 years before the arrival of her younger sister, she held a particularly special place in her parents’ hearts. “They were super possessive and protective,” she fondly recalled.
Despite her parents’ concerns, Rashmika followed her instincts and stepped into acting. “No one from my community had entered films,” she said, recalling the mixed reactions to her first paycheck. “The conversations were not easy. No one in our co-community had ever been in films. I was the first, and some people were judgmental,” she admitted. Grateful for the support she’s received, she added, “Thanks to them, I’m here today.”
Rashmika is gearing up to lead several major projects this year. She currently appears in Kuberaa, directed by Sekhar Kammula, sharing the screen with Dhanush and Nagarjuna. The film premiered in theatres on June 20. In addition, she has two upcoming films, Thama and The Girlfriend, highlighting her versatility across different genres.
