Timothée Chalamet becomes Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, watch trailer

The world of cinema is about to be electrified with the arrival of A Complete Unknown, a biopic chronicling the meteoric rise of Bob Dylan. Directed by the acclaimed James Mangold (known for his work on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Logan), the film promises a deep dive into the formative years of one of music’s most influential figures.

At the heart of the film is Timothée Chalamet, who takes on the iconic role of the young Dylan. The actor has undergone a remarkable transformation, both physically and vocally, to embody the spirit of the folk-rock legend. Chalamet’s dedication to the role is evident in the recently released teaser trailer, where he delivers a powerful rendition of Dylan’s classic ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.’

 

Set against the vibrant backdrop of the early 1960s New York music scene, the film follows Dylan’s journey from an unknown Minnesotan to a global sensation. As he navigates the tumultuous world of fame, the young singer-songwriter finds himself caught in a love triangle between Sylvie Russo, played by Elle Fanning, and fellow folk icon Joan Baez, portrayed by Monica Barbaro.

 

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Edward Norton as folk singer Pete Seeger, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie, and Dan Fogler as Dylan’s manager, Albert Grossman. This star-studded lineup promises to bring authenticity and depth to the story.

 

In a statement, director James Mangold expressed his excitement about exploring this pivotal period in American culture. “A young 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with two dollars in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years. First being embraced into a family of folk music in New York and of course kind of outrunning him at it,” Mangold told Collider.

 

The film will release in December 2024.
