SHOCKING: While CBFC passes adult-themed films with U/A, clean entertainer Good Fortune gets awarded with ‘A’ rating

By Fenil Seta -

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) often faces criticism for demanding cuts in films, with viewers deeming its decisions arbitrary or unfair. Interestingly, this week’s Hollywood release Good Fortune has been cleared without a single cut. Yet, audiences are still displeased, as the CBFC has granted it an ‘A’ (Adults Only) rating.

SHOCKING: While CBFC passes adult-themed films with U/A, clean entertainer Good Fortune gets awarded with ‘A’ rating

The Examining Committee passed Good Fortune on October 3, approving it in its entirety with no audio or visual modifications. However, it was certified for adult viewing only. The length of the film, as mentioned on the censor certificate, is 98 minutes. In other words, the film is 1 hour and 38 minutes long.

A source told Bollywood Hungama, “The CBFC, like God, works in mysterious ways. A film like Jaat had a lot of violence and disturbing scenes. Yet, it got a U/A rating. Housefull 5 reeked of vulgarity and even then, the CBFC didn’t give the film an ‘A’ rating. But a film like Good Fortune, that can easily be seen with the whole family, and which makes an important point about haves and have-nots, is meant only for adults! This film has no sex scenes or gore. Even the kissing scenes are mild. At the most, the film should have got a U/A 16+ rating if not U/A 13+ or ‘U’.”

An exhibition manager commented, “An ‘A’ rating can affect its prospects, more so when it doesn’t look like an adult film. Anyway, it has only 4 days to score at the box office with the Diwali releases (Thamma and Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat) arriving in full force from Tuesday, October 21.”

However, an industry insider remarked, “Good Fortune has profanities and shows use of drugs. It has got an ‘R’ rating in the USA and a 15 rating in the UK. Also, let’s not forget that the CBFC has also given ‘A’ rated to violent movies like Fateh, Coolie, Animal, etc. Moreover, the distribution partner in India could have muted the abuses. Then, it would have gotten a U/A certification. This angle also needs to be explored.”

But the earlier source retorted, “Comparing with other countries is not fair as it's like comparing apples to oranges. Chhaava and Jaat were given M18 rating in Singapore; its equivalent to an ‘A’ certificate in India. Why, even Baahubali 2 was not allowed for those under 18 in South Korea. Moreover, Good Fortune is filled with profanities. It has a few abuses which could have been muted. The same goes for drug use. It's just one scene, and it's intended to raise laughs. It's not an explicit scene at all and can be seen with family without any discomfort.”

Past experiences

Good Fortune is not the first family-friendly Hollywood flick to get an ‘A’ rating. The 2016 acclaimed flick La La Land was given an ‘A’ rating in India. It got a 12A rating in the UK and PG-13 in the USA. A similar rating to the 2021 Ryan Reynolds-starrer Free Guy. But in India, it was awarded with an ‘A’ rating.
