Selena Gomez opens up about her health challenges: “I can’t carry my own children”

By Bollywood Hungama News Network -

Selena Gomez, the 32-year-old star of Only Murders in the Building, has revealed that she cannot carry her own children due to significant health risks. In an interview with Vanity Fair for its October issue, Gomez opened up about this deeply personal struggle for the first time, sharing her grief over the realization. "I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while," she said.

The Impact of Lupus and Other Health Diagnoses

Gomez was diagnosed with lupus in 2015, an autoimmune disease that attacks the body’s own tissues. In 2017, she underwent a life-saving kidney transplant. On top of her lupus diagnosis, Gomez has also battled anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. These compounded health issues have made it impossible for her to carry a child safely, but Gomez remains hopeful for her future.

Considering adoption due to personal inspiration

Gomez has turned her attention to adoption as a possibility, partially inspired by her own family’s story. Her mother, Mandy Teefey, was adopted, and this has given her a unique perspective. "I probably wouldn’t be here. I don’t know what her life would’ve been like. She and I are very thankful for how life played out," Gomez said, reflecting on her mother’s journey and how it has shaped her views on motherhood.

Surrogacy and adoption: New paths to motherhood

Although Gomez envisioned starting a family in a traditional way by the age of 35, she is now considering surrogacy and adoption as her new path forward. "It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me," she shared. Gomez remains optimistic, stating, "At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby."

Continuing to shine despite personal struggles

While Gomez navigates these personal challenges, her career continues to thrive. Most recently, she starred in Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez, which won the TIFF Variety Artisan Award at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. Despite her health battles, Gomez remains resilient, both in her personal life and her professional journey.
