Yami Gautam Dhar will next be seen in Suparn Verma’s Haq, which is based on the famous Shah Bano case. The film will see her play the central character. The actress got talking about the film and more in an interview with us.

Haq deals with the controversial Shah Bano case. How much of the original has the film retained?

 

Staying true to authenticity is incredibly important to me, especially when a film draws from real events that have shaped our society. Haq is not a biopic, but it is inspired by the powerful journey of Shah Bano and what her case represented for women’s rights in India. The essence of that struggle — the emotional fight for justice, the clash between personal and society, we have tried to capture in its own shape and form as close to reality as possible.

 

So, Haq is a fictionalized version of the truth?

 

Of course, there are parts that are worked on to turn it into a cinematic journey but the true story is its axis. Cinema does require interpretation but throughout the process there has been a deep respect for the lives involved. My performance has been guided by a commitment to honour the spirit of courage and dignity at the heart of this history.

 

You are, like Deepika Padukone, a mother and a professional. How do you apportion your time?

 

I genuinely believe once a mother, always a mother. Your priority, your world will always be your child first. Having said that, being a working mother means, also, your commitment towards whatever work you take up. I am learning to embrace that flow instead of chasing a perfect balance.

 

You have support in looking after your little son?

 

I am and will always be grateful to my mother for stepping in, taking care and holding the fort back home with my son while I am away at work. Becoming a mother shifts your entire universe and gives you a completely different sense of purpose. Everything — your routine, priorities, even your definition of strength — evolves because of the little one who now owns your heart. At the same time, storytelling remains my passion and something that fulfils me deeply.

 

How do you balance out the two overlapping roles as a mother and an actor?

 

Balancing both roles isn’t a fixed formula; it requires constant adjustment. What matters to me is that my son grows up seeing his mother pursue her dreams with joy, while knowing he is always at the centre of my world.

 

How do you look on your journey so far as a wife, mother and actress?

 

I feel incredibly grateful for how much I have grown through every phase of my life. As an artist, my idea of success has become more wholesome. As a wife, I have a partner who encourages me and shares every milestone with me. And as a mother, there is a beautiful new dimension to my life — joy, perspective, humility. All these roles have shaped me into someone who can connect more authentically, both on and off screen. I hope I continue to evolve with consistency, keep challenging myself, and stay open to new adventures. My journey so far feels like the beginning of something even more exciting and I am excited for the audience to see what we, as a team, bring with Haq.
