Yami Gautam breaks silence on never winning awards; says, “I have stopped seeking any kind of validation from anyone”

Amidst the glitz and glamour of Indian cinema’s biggest nights, seasoned actor Yami Gautam has candidly addressed a seldom discussed issue: being nominated often but never winning a major film award. In an interview ahead of her upcoming release, Haq, she revealed that the lack of an award win no longer defines her sense of self-worth.

Gautam, who has earned nominations for top honours such as the Filmfare Awards and IIFA Awards for works like A Thursday, Article 370 and Bala, acknowledged the fact that while these nods are meaningful, the trophy cabinet has remained empty.

 

As she explained: “As much as I have understood the Bhagwat Geeta, what Lord Krishna says to Arjun is true. Not that I have become that detached like the most perfect human, but if you have the ability to detach from the success and the fear of losing or seeking validation through somebody else’s perspective, you are fine. I have stopped seeking any kind of validation from anyone. Agar woh award milta hai to main bahut achhi actress hoon, otherwise shayad nahi hoon. Aisa nahi hai.”

 

Gautam emphasised that the deepest reward for her comes from the audience and the creative journey itself, rather than a physical accolade. “The fact that my audience loves me, certain directors and producers are willing to take a punt on me, usse bada award kya hai jab audience aapko utha deti hai. Baaki sab aana jaana hai. Audience ko hi pata hai.”

 

The actress also noted that she had won several debutant awards for her first film, Vicky Donor back in 2013, but since then the major awards have eluded her despite consistent work and recognition.

 

On the work front, Yami will be seem in Haq, set to release on November 7, she plays a Muslim woman who seeks legal maintenance after her divorce, inspired by the landmark Shah Bano case.

 

With this candid admission, Yami Gautam underscores a broader message for the industry and audience alike: true validation may not always come with a trophy, but rather through authenticity, impact and connection.
