Shakti Mohan says she declined payment for Padmaavat song, calls working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali a ‘Big Opportunity’

Dancer and choreographer Shakti Mohan recently shared that she chose not to take payment for choreographing a song in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama Padmaavat, calling the experience more valuable than the remuneration.

In an interview with the YouTube channel Hauterrfly, Mohan spoke about working with Bhansali and described the filmmaker as extremely detail-oriented on set. “He is very strict. Even if you breathe, he notices it,” she said, referring to the director’s meticulous approach while shooting song sequences and scenes. Mohan added that collaborating with a filmmaker known for his visually grand storytelling was an important learning opportunity early in her career.

 

Speaking about her decision to forgo payment for the project, Mohan said the opportunity itself was rewarding. “For me, it was a very big opportunity. I didn’t want to charge anything because the chance to work with him itself meant a lot,” she said. She added that observing Bhansali’s filmmaking process gave her a deeper understanding of the scale and preparation required for large cinematic productions.

 

Released in 2018, Padmaavat featured Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles. The historical epic became known for its large-scale production design and elaborate musical numbers, including songs such as “Ghoomar” and “Binte Dil.” Bhansali, who also composed the film’s music, is widely recognized for his visually stylised filmmaking and highly choreographed song sequences.

 

Mohan first gained national recognition after winning the dance reality show Dance India Dance. She later expanded her career as a choreographer, performer and television personality, appearing as a judge and mentor on several dance-based shows while also working on stage productions and music videos.
