Prakash Jha opens up on Raajneeti 2, says stories challenging the Status Quo are tough to tell

Filmmaker Prakash Jha has confirmed that a sequel to his political drama Raajneeti is currently in development. In a recent interview with SCREEN, the director revealed that he is actively working on the script of Raajneeti 2, while also acknowledging the challenges of making politically driven cinema in India.

Speaking about the project, Jha said, “I’m actively working on Raajneeti 2.” He added that films that question power structures are often difficult to make, explaining that it has “always been tough to tell stories that challenge the status quo.”

 

Reflecting on the continuing relevance of political storytelling, Jha suggested that the changing socio-political landscape provides ample material for a sequel. In earlier conversations, the filmmaker had also noted that developments in contemporary politics make the idea of revisiting the world of Raajneeti compelling. While details about the cast and production timeline remain under wraps, reports indicate that the script is currently being developed and casting discussions may follow once the story is finalised.

 

Released in 2010, Raajneeti was a political thriller inspired by elements of the Indian epic Mahabharata. The film featured an ensemble cast including Ranbir Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Katrina Kaif, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpayee, Nana Patekar and Naseeruddin Shah. The film explored power struggles within a political family and went on to become a commercial success at the box office.

 

Over the years, Jha has built a reputation for directing socially and politically themed films such as Gangaajal, Apaharan and Aarakshan, many of which examine issues of governance, corruption and power dynamics. His films often blend mainstream storytelling with political commentary. For now, Raajneeti 2 remains in the writing stage, but Jha’s confirmation has renewed interest in a sequel to one of Bollywood’s most prominent political dramas.
