The past week has been great, thanks to the exceptional performances of Gadar 2 and OMG 2. While the Sunny Deol-starrer was expected to score huge, many had doubts if OMG 2 will be able to excel since it faced competition from Gadar 2. Moreover, due to the adults-only certificate, a section of the audience couldn’t catch it in cinemas. Yet, it had a fine opening and grew with each passing day. In its first week, it collected Rs. 85.05 crores and will enter the Rs. 100 crore club in the second weekend.

But the journey from conception to release has been a tough one. OMG 2 is based on a father who fights for his son, who is caught masturbating in his school toilet. How the messenger of Lord Shiva helps the father in his battle forms the crux of this entertaining and enlightening drama. Director Amit Rai revealed that due to the film’s plot, several production houses, including Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, Ashutosh Gowariker’s Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Pvt Ltd and Sony Pictures refused to back OMG 2. He also applauded Akshay Kumar and the film’s producers for trusting him and the script.

Amit Rai told Mid-Day, “The film was turned down by nine production houses, including Ashutosh Gowariker’s studio, Dharma Productions and Sony Pictures. People called my story crass. Akshay and the producers told me to run with it. They gave me everything they could—from budget to permission to shoot inside the Mahakaleshwar temple [in Ujjain].”

A month before OMG 2’s release, it had a tough time at the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Bollywood Hungama was the first one to report that OMG 2 has got 27 cuts along with an ‘A’ certificate. Amit Rai, on this, revealed that the producers begged the CBFC members for a U/A certificate. He stated, “Our producers were almost begging them to change the film’s certification. I folded my hands in front of them, but they didn’t relent. They said PhD kids can watch the film, but it’s [made] for teenagers.”

Besides Akshay Kumar, OMG 2 also stars Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam Dhar.
