Karan Johar recalls filming Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol without informing them in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

This year, Karan Johar celebrated 25 years in the industry as his debut directorial Kuch Kuch Hota Hai completed two and half decades, since it released in October 1998. The iconic romantic coming-of-age drama featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji has inspired an entire generation with its fashion, dialogues, songs, and scenes. In a recent interaction, as Karan discussed his journey which kicked off from this popular movie, the filmmaker recalled shooting a scene without informing the lead actors.

In an interview with Film Companion, Karan Johar confessed that he shot a scene in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai without informing Shah Rukh Khan or Kajol. The scene in question is where Shah Rukh reunites with Kajol after eight years, when they incidentally come in front of each other at the temple in a summer camp in Shimla. While SRK follows his daughter Anjali to meet her at the camp, he is unaware that the teacher there is Kajol aka his college best friend Anjali Sharma.

 

It seems that the expressions that the actors were giving were for a rehearsal but Karan Johar had continued to keep the camera rolling and had shot the sequence without informing the duo. “I explained the scene to them (SRK and Kajol) and I played a song for atmosphere. The two of them came into the frame and performed. But before the rehearsal began, I told my DOP Santosh to roll the camera. After we were done, I said cut. Shah Rukh asked, ‘Now we will do the take?’ I said, ‘No, we have rolled.’ He was surprised,” the filmmaker revealed.

 

In fact, we hear that the Junior Johar shooting this sequence in an unusual manner also left his father Yash Johar surprised and impressed because his son had completed a shot that might have taken hours in a much lesser time frame. The filmmaker continued, “My father was like, ‘Beta tu ghar jaa aur soja. Ho gaya na kaam (Son, you go home and get some sleep, now that your work is done). Don’t worry about anything’.”

 

The filmmaker also went on to add how he ended up being reminded of this even in his recent release Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. It seems that the intense chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt prompted him to shoot a sequence where Rani refuses to marry Rocky and the latter says, ‘Handle with care, I am fragile’ in one shot. “Ranveer and Alia have such great conversational chemistry. They give each other gap when required, speak over each other when needed, two actors…so much in sync with each other, it happens only when it happens,” he added.
