South Korean singer-songwriter Kang Daniel made a dashing comeback with his first full-length album The Story. The singer has been making a splash with his mini-albums all this while, but his full-length album has simply been off the charts. With superb collaborations featuring Jessi, CHANCELLOR, Dbo, and sokodomo, the 11-track album has been remarkable in setting the singer’s image in stone. The Story was released on May 24, 2022. THE STORY

 

The song begins with reverbing guitar strums and makes way for more upbeat music as he croons the succinct lyrics. He is narrating a captivating story through ‘The Story’.

 

UPSIDE DOWN

 

‘Upside Down’ is a shade apart from its predecessor. The song has funky R&B beats and it soon progresses to a rising chorus. Kang Daniel sings about living in an upside-down world where everything is different.

 

LOSER (ft. Dbo)

 

Dbo joins hands with Kang Daniel for this hip-hop track. Their voices match beautifully in this track. Dbo's rap verse is a good introduction to the artist.

 

PARADE

 

‘Parade’ speaks about the parade of life that the protagonist walks through for celebrating his life. There are Western music influences in the track and it gives off gothic vibes, especially in the bridge.

 

DON’T TELL (ft. JESSI)

 

Latin music weaves through this laid-back track. Jessi's rap verses blend seamlessly with Kang Daniel's vocal verses. The funk-pop elements in the track make it a perfect track to add to a sundowner party playlist.

 

RIDE 4 U

 

‘Ride 4 U’ features muted music and the focus is solely on Kang Daniel's breathy vocals. The music slowly rises as the emotions also climb the ladder. The trap beats induce a hazy vibe as the song concludes.

 

HOW WE LIVE (ft. sokodomo)

 

‘How We Live’ is a fun hip-hop number. The vibes it exudes are fun and upbeat. It speaks about curiosity and the will to live on one's own terms. Kang Daniel and sokodomo present good chemistry in this track.

 

MAD (ft. CHANCELLOR)

 

‘Mad’ is a smooth dubstep number. Chancellor's rap verse joins Kang Daniel's vocals and creates a fluid semi-rock foot-tapping number.

 

1000x

 

After a series of hip hop and rap numbers, Kang Daniel shifts to a mellow mood with ‘1000x’. The song boasts of love and is based on muted instruments. The music flows at a steady pace, with spaced-out highlight beats.

 

MOMENT 

 

The album concludes with the soft track ‘Moment’. Kang Daniel's breathy vocals accentuate the mellow piano tunes. One needs a moment to completely immerse into the song.

 

Kang Daniel’s The Story takes the listener up and down a joyride. Each of the 11 tracks is a story within itself. What makes the album special is that it marks the beginning of a new era in his career, after concluding the ‘Color’ trilogy in 2021. The album features multiple genres like R&B, hip hop, and rock which showcase the artist’s versatility even further. Kang Daniel also makes an attempt at painting a multifaceted picture of romantic and self-love.
