Javed Akhtar defends daughter Zoya Akhtar’s freedom in filmmaking amid nepotism discourse; says, “She has all the right to take anybody under the sun, she shouldn’t be questioned”

Renowned lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar recently shared his thoughts on nepotism while discussing his daughter Zoya Akhtar's upcoming film, The Archies, which is set to premiere on Netflix. During a candid interaction featuring Zoya, Javed Akhtar, singer Ankur Tiwari, and Dot, the veteran writer expressed his views on the prevalent discourse around nepotism in the film industry.

Javed Akhtar firmly stated during a recent interaction on Day 3 of Sahitya Aajtak 2023 that Zoya, as a filmmaker , has the right to cast anyone she deems fit for her project, and her decisions should not be subjected to scrutiny. He emphasized that Zoya is taking personal risks by backing her project with her own resources, making her choices within the realm of her creative vision. He said, “She has all the right to take anybody under the sun, she shouldn’t be questioned. She is taking the risk, it is her project and she is backing it.”

 

The acclaimed writer defended the film industry against the nepotism narrative, asserting, “Film industry ke baare mein baat hoti rehti hain nepotism ki. Nepotism film industry mein ho hi nahi sakta. Duniya mein har jagah ho jaye, par yaha nahi ho sakta… Lekin, yahan nepotism isiliye nahi hain kyuki aadmi yaha khud risk le raha hain. Wo kisi aur ke kandhe pe bandook rakhe huye hain (There is a lot of talk about nepotism in the film industry, but it cannot exist here. It can exist anywhere in the world but not here because people take risks here and don’t depend on other people).”

 

The Archies, directed by Zoya Akhtar draws inspiration from the American comic book series of the same name. The film explores romance and friendship among its characters in the 1960s, emphasizing their collective effort to preserve their town, Riverdale, from impending threats posed by developers looking to dismantle a beloved park. With the birthday celebration offering a glimpse into the chemistry shared by the cast, fans can look forward to a captivating on-screen narrative when The Archies hits the screens.

 

The film is a collaborative effort between Netflix India, Tiger Baby, Archie Comics, and Graphic India. Helmed by Zoya Akhtar, the highly anticipated film exclusively releases on Netflix worldwide on December 7, 2023.
