By Soumya Anantharaman -

We have some very popular fictional investigative characters that have gained momentum in novels. For example, from the teenage sleuth Nancy Drew to the defence attorney Perry Mason to of course, how can we forget Sherlock Holmes, we have hordes of characters from books who have only further instigated our interest in investigation and crimes around us. But we Malayalis have one more character that we have grown up watching and it is played by none other than Mammootty.

Happy Birthday Mammootty: 4 films that will make fans WISH for the return of the superstar’s most beloved characters - Sethurama Iyer

We are talking about his role Sethurama Iyer. Everyone who is a fan of Mollywood, would have probably watched at least one film from the CBI series which features the actor as a no nonsense investigative officer. Not just that. Like our other popular American sleuths, this CBI officer Sethurama Iyer also has his share of assistants who have always supported him in the form of Vikram [played by Jagathy Sreekumar] and Chacko [played by Mukesh].

Considering that sequels and its likes are a trend in the Indian film industry currently, we wish the Malayalam superstar plans to return to this role that he played with aplomb. But before that, let us remind you and take you through the journey of Mammootty as Sethurama Iyer and his CBI Diary ‘Kurippu’:

Oru CBI Diary Kurippu [1988]

This film is the first in the series where the journey of Sethurama Iyer started. Director, K Madhu has designed this character based on the real life police officer Radhavinod Raju. Coming to Oru CBI Diary Kurippu, while this film gives us an insight of the intelligence of Sethuram, a Tamil Brahmin hailing from Kerala but also shows how brilliant he is at his job. Furthermore, here’s where the police officer Chacko aka Mukesh meets Sethurama and his entourage which also includes Vikram and another person called Harry played by none other than another famous Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi. In fact, the character played by Mammootty is actually put in charge of the case which revolves around Chacko’s cousin Omana in the film.

Jagratha [1989]

After the stupendous success of Oru CBI Diary Kurippu, K Madhu decided to collaborate with Mammootty immediately after it for the second case in the murder mystery series, Jagratha. This time, with a different title, Sethurama Iyer is all set to solve yet another complex case of an actress’ death. Whether it is a suicide or a murder? If it is the latter, then who is the killer? To answer these questions, we see the intelligent officer played by Mammootty back in action with his team, Vikram and Chacko. In fact, this film also gives a glimpse into the CBI officer’s personal life wherein it shows his young son for a scene. Besides this film, no other ones in the franchise has showcased anything about the personal life of Sethurama Iyer. As mentioned before, the CBI series of films adhere strictly to the plotline revolving around the murder, with rare references on its lead characters’ personal lives.

Sethurama Iyer CBI [2004]

15 years after the two part CBI series of films were released, K Madhu decided to refresh the minds of the audiences by bringing back Sethurama Iyer in a film named Sethurama Iyer CBI. Maintaining his look in the half sleeve shirts and pants and vermillion stripe on the forehead, we see not much of the difference in the look of the unperturbed investigating police officer. His calm and composed demeanour continues as he sets out an impossible journey of proving a serial killer played by Kalabhavan Mani as innocent. Retaining the essence of its character that was sketched more than a decade ago, the film also sees the return of Vikram and Chacko as the assistants of the sincere CBI officer

Nerariyan CBI [2005]

Unfortunately, this is the last of the CBI series that released a year after Sethurama Iyer CBI released. Yet again bringing the murder story of a woman, this one also has its series of suspects and accused with eventually one of them turning out to be the killer who committed the crime. And just like its other prequels, this one too retained its plotline of who-dunit murder until the end and avoided any kind of musical distraction like songs and dance. And honestly, one of the biggest plus points of this suspense thriller franchise is that it is devoid of all those commercial elements and yet manages to keep the audiences engrossed with some nail-biting moments.

Now that you have reminisced about all the films that make Sethurama Iyer as iconic as ever, don’t you think it is time for a fifth part in the making? Filmmakers and Mammootty, are you listening?
